Presentation

The 16th edition of the Conference on Design of Circuits and Integrated Systems (DCIS 2001) will be held in Porto, Portugal, November 20-23, 2001. It is organized by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of FEUP (Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto) and by INESC Porto (Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores do Porto).  The purpose of the Conference is to provide a forum to exchange ideas and to show industrial and research results in microelectronics and related areas.

Welcome

It is my great pleasure to welcome the 16th edition of DCIS and all its participants to Porto.

Porto is an old and active city that is undertaking a considerable effort of renovation during its tenure as European Capital of Culture in the year 2001.  It is located in the north of Portugal, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean and their inhabitants are known for their rugged and hard-working nature, well tempered by their love for eating out, drinking, and enjoying the life of their city.  This combination of serious work and a relaxed atitude seems quite fitting as a stage for DCIS.

Authors and reviewers, the panel organizers and the session chairs gave their best effort for the success of the Conference.   A word of gratitude is due to the sponsors for their valuable support.  Special thanks to the members of the Local Organizing Committee and of the Programme Committee, who worked hard to ensure a smooth operation and a well balanced, high quality Technical Programme.

At the end of the day the quality of a Conference is judged by the quality of the work that is submitted and presented.  A word of praise goes to the authors who worked hard in order to show the results of their research in the best, most effective way.  I sincerely hope that this effort is fully rewarded with feedback and useful comments from other participants.

I hope this year's Conference will constitute an excellent opportunity for exchanging views, sharing experiences and enlarging our knowledge on current and future issues for the design of circuits and integrated systems.  To all of the participants I wish an enjoyable Conference and a pleasant stay in Porto.

About Porto

Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage City, is located in the northern part of Portugal.  It is well known for the Port Wine, whose grapes grow in the hills and slopes facing the Douro river. Bridges for the Future" is the unifying theme for a diversified and innovative programme of cultural events and urban renewal that celebrates Porto, in 2001, as an European Capital of Culture (http://www.porto2001.pt).
