EM 106 - Mechanics I (Mecânica I)

Statics - Sliding vectors theory. Force, moment, couple and resultant concepts. Two and three dimensional equilibrium conditions. Mechanical system isolation and problem formulation. Free-body diagram. Reactions calculation. Plane and space trusses. Members’ forces calculation: joint and sections methods. Notions and problems of friction: wedges, screws, thrust bearings, disk friction and flexible belts. Masses geometry - Center of mass and centroid. Theorems of Pappus. Line, area and mass moments of inertia. Products of inertia. Transfer (Steiner theorem) and rotation of axes. Matrix of inertia. Principal moments and directions of inertia.

Objectives

This discipline is intended to familiarize the students with the application of the vector calculus to the study of statics, to give the general principles of static equilibrium of bodies in rest and to calculate the reaction forces, to analyze friction in connections and to determine mass centers and the matrix of inertia of areas and solids.
