EM 133 - Foundry Technology ( Tecnologia da Fundição )

1. Product development. Rapid Prototyping. 2. Foundry technologies: - sand casting, permanent mould casting and non-conventional foundry technologies. 3. How to produce a cast piece. Moulds and cast pieces size and shape differences. Melting and solidification of metallic alloys. Shrinkage (contraction during solidification) and the need of feeders. Gating and filling of moulds. 4. Alloys used in Foundry and typical applications. Furnaces and other melting and pouring equipments. 5. Casting-design. 6. Criteria to select foundry processes. The importance of the design, the desired properties and the number of cast pieces to be produced. 7. Foundry industry, ecology and professional safety. Recycling and valorisation of residues: - new challenges.

Objectives

To sensibilize the students for the potential and the limitations of foundry technology, to the very wide (but limited) design freedom in foundry; to the technical and economic problems related to bad design; and to the ambiental problems related to foundry industry, the importance of recycling and valorisation of residues. context.
