EM 517 - Plates and Shells (Placas e Cascas)

Brief reference to the fundamental concepts of Continuum Mechanics. Classical theory for bending of thin plates. Methods of solution of the Lagrange equation. Exact solutions and approximate solutions including the finite element method and the finite 36 difference method. Theory of Reissner-Mindlin for bending of moderately thick plates. Methods of solution of the equilibrium equations, Exact and approximate solutions for Reissner-Mindlin Plates. Theory of von Kármán for large deformations of thin plates. Deformations and stresses in shells. Membrane theory for shells of revolution. Bending theory for cylindrical shells. Bending theory for shells of revolution. Force method.

Objectives

Knowledge and understanding of the theories and methods mentioned, required for the solution of engineering problems involving plates and shells. Development of analysis and synthesis capabilities, through problems including study of anisotropic laminates and involving MAPLE programming.
