EM 614 - Computer Integrated Manufacturing (Produção Assistida por Computador)

The major topics derive from the concepts of integration and flexibility in manufacturing systems. It starts with an introduction to these concepts and to a characterization of manufacturing systems: definitions, functions and activities, flow of information and of materials. A presentation of the systems and technologies supporting the different activities and their integration is also made in order to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of the solutions available. They include an overview of systems for production planning and control systems (i.e. ERP, and its evolution), for technological planning (i.e. CAPP) systems and for production (CAD/CAM, MES, AGV, AS/RS, CNC). The importance of tools for integration such as the STEP standard and the use of communication networks are also included.

Objectives

The main objective is to introduce the basic principles and technologies associated with the concepts of integrated production and flexible manufacturing. The emphasis is on the shop floor level and the technology for flexible automation.
