EM 618 - Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer  (Métodos Experimentais em Fluidos e Calor)

MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS: General topics (revision). ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA: Errors and uncertainties; presentation of experimental results. PRESSURE MEASUREMENT: Manometers and others electric transducers. VELOCITY MEASUREMENT: Pitot tube, thermal and optical anemometers. FLOW RATE MEASUREMENT: Flow-obstruction methods and electric transducers for volumetric and mass flow rate measurements. THERMOMETRY: Thermocouples, resistance and radiation thermometers (revision); errors of system/sensor interaction. HYGROMETRY: electrical, psychometric and condensation methods. LABORATORY ASSIGNMENTS.

Objectives

This course provides the students with notions about experimental methods and measurement techniques, in the fields of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, to allow the students to choose between available methods and instruments. Data analysis and measurement uncertainties are also treated, in order to correctly represent experimental results, and to adequately plan the experiments.
