EM 635 - Polymer Injection Moulding (Moldação por Injecção de Polímeros)

Introduction to polymers: principal properties, polymers and plastics, polymer structure and morphology, main transitions, behaviour of polymers (rheological, mechanical) Thermoplastic materials: types and classification, properties and applications, polymeric materials databases. The basics of the injection moulding process: cycle, equipments, flow of polymer melts, dimensioning of feeding systems, heat exchanges in moulds, processing conditions. The injection moulding process: principal physical phenomena, microstrcutural development, relationships between processing and the moulding properties, process simulation. Design with injection moulded plastics: specific aspects on the injection moulded product development, technological implications in part design, fundamental guidelines, computational tools CAE.

Objectives

To give introductory notions on polymeric materials (with emphasis on thermoplastics). To transmit the basic concepts associated to the injection moulding process; to understand the process and the properties of moulded parts (relationships between the processing, the microstructure and the final properties). To present specific aspects of the development of injection moulded products. To use commercially available CAE tools..
