Introduction

This web page was created to provide a functional showroom of the work in progress during the master thesis. The objective of this page is, therefore, to present the work done, the work plan, some results and to serve as an interface to whomever would like to follow the development done.

Technologic development related to batteries is one of the main challenges in the electric mobility scenario in Portugal. Thus, in order to support a high penetration of urban electric vehicles in Portuguese roads, innovative solutions to determine the range and autonomy of a vehicle are needed. The development of a real-time algorithm to estimate the range and autonomy of an electric vehicle require the knowledge of various battery and vehicle related information.

Master Thesis Objectives

The final objective of this master thesis is, as the title shows, a real-time estimation of the autonomy of the vehicle. In order to achieve those values some steps towards a good understanding of the total system are needed. These thoughts lead us to an ambitious yet motivating strategy.

Strategy

To achieve a good understanding of the system as whole, small steps are needed each one with important information. The first step is to know the pertinent characteristics of a power source to arrive at their state of charge. Next, some state of charge methods must be analyzed and later implemented. A good knowledge of the power source SoC in an electric vehicle can lead to an effective acquaintance of the battery autonomy.
