Non-commemorative scarves

Other scarves

I do not know when first appeared the football scarves (perhaps before the sixties of the twentieth century), but they  certainly had cross bars with the club colours. They would be woolly scarves, knitted by a devoted mother or grandmother. Only later did the commercial versions show up, first handcrafted and later industrially produced.

The scarf depicted below, albeit from a little later, is a good example of the first scarves. It is dated from the 1976/77 season and it is of genuine wool and not knitted acrylic as it was common in the 80s, with handcraft production. The crest, embroidered, was sewn on, several years later.

This scarf was given to me by my friend Bruno and was knitted by his mother. It is so valuable to me that I do not feel as its owner but simply as its faithful trustee. Place the cursor over the image to see the detail of the crest and the wool stitching:

The commemorative and very old scarves are not easy to date without a credible witness. The most I can say is that this satin printed scarf is certainly one of the oldest:

Printed knitted scarf, certainly of the eighties, is one of the oldest edited by the first FC Porto ultras group, Dragões Azuis (Blue Dragons), today extinct. The scarf is in magnific condition, as brand new!

Another old scarf, probably from 1989, since it is very similar to other one from that date. It is one of the rare scarves representing the old stadium (Estádio das Antas). (Put the pointer over the image to see the stadium.):

Printed knitted scarf, probably of the early nineties. In fact, the style of the background in which the crest is inserted is only found in scarves clebrating the champion title of 91/92:

Printed knitted scarves of uncertain date but probably from the same period the previous (late eighties or early nineties):

Printed satin type scarf, edited by the Dragões Azuis (Blue Dragons), probably of the early nineties:

Printed satin type scarf, probably of the early nineties, since its style is very similar to the commemorative scarves of those years (see, for instance, the season 1992/93):

A scarf whose story ist difficult to restore! Its looking is quite old aiming to the eighties or early nineties, but is a jacquard type scarf, so it must have been produced abroad! In fact, I bought it to a foreign seller! Another mysterious thing is that it displays the old crest of FC Porto and not the present, designed by our player Simplício (Augusto Baptista Ferreira) who, in a very creative way, overlapped the arms of town (Porto) on the old crest:

This is the first FC Porto scarf that was produced with the technique referred as "ricamata" (Italian word which means embroidered!). It should be produced in 1993 or 1994, probably abroad:

This scarf is the second one of the embroidered type that was produced for FC Porto. It appeared for sale on the day of the game Porto-Milan, of the Champions League, on 13/04/94. This copy was purchased in Porto in 1997 by a supporter of Man. United (Andy McMinn). Eight years later it come back home!

This scarf is the third of the embroidered type to be produced for FC Porto. Probably launched on 1994 or 1995:

Beautiful embroidered type scarf, which like the previous is probably from 1994 or 1995:

Embroidered type scarf, edited by Adidas, FC Porto sponsor from 1984 to 1997:

Jacquard type uniface scarf, bought from a French seller but of unknown origin:

Another jacquard type uniface scarf, displaying the ancient crest of FC Porto, bought from a British seller but, as the previous, of unknown origin:

This embroidered type scarf has the curiosity of displaying the cups won on the glorious season of 1986/87. As from 1995, the scarves licensed by FC Porto began to show the year of production, this one should be from 1994 or 1995:

A new version of the embroidered type "cidade invicta" (invincible town) scarf, licensed by FC Porto in 1995:

Beautiful embroidered type scarf, licensed by FC Porto in 1995:

Amusing mistake of the previous edition - UNA instead of UMA. This copy was sold on the day of the game Porto-Rosenborg, of the Champions League, on 30/10/96:

This edition, an embroidered type one from 1996, is also very interesting:

This variant of the previous, also of 1996, has a weft using red thread instead of pale yellow:

Embroidered type scarf, of unknown date. It should be produced in Spain and then the inscription "Superdragõens" (instead Superdragões), which must be in "Spaniguese" language:

Jacquard type scarf, with two equal faces, edited by Kappa, FC Porto sponsor between 1997 and 2000:

Embroidered type scarf, licensed by FC Porto, edited in 1999:

English made edition, of unknown date, jacquard type with two equal faces:

A scarf from Timor-Leste, produced according the special style of the local "tais". This is an evidence that in Timor-Leste there are also FC Porto supporters. Brought from Dili in 2002:

A specila gift of my friend Bruno Sampaio

Embroidered type scarf, given by FC Porto to the sponsoring companies:

A gift of my son Rui

Another embroidered type scarf given by FC Porto to the official partners:

Embroidered type scarf given by FC Porto to the business partner companies:

Jacquard type scarf, with two equal faces, with origin and date unknown:

One more embroidered type scarf, this one dated 2003, given by FC Porto to special people:

A pure silk scarf, official UEFA product with the Champions League logo, only given to VIPS:

Interesting British edition, of unknown date, jacquard type, with two equal faces:

Another foreign edition, of unknown origin, but imported from France, of jacquard type with two equal faces:

An edition of 2005, mixing a club with the national team: "Sou Português e Portista" means "I'm Portuguese  and Portist, i.e., FC Porto fan"! But the worst is the exhortation: "OOOH PORTUGAL ALLEZ"! After all, since the word "ALLEZ" is French, am I Portuguese or ... French?!!!

Two more embroidered type editions from 2005, licensed by FC Porto:

Sublimated type 2006 edition, with two equal faces, non licensed by FC Porto:

Embroidered type 2006 edition, licensed by FC Porto, do tipo bordado, stating the date of foundation of the club:

Another embroidered type 2006 edition, licensed by FC Porto, but stating the date of foundation of the club in a typical commercial form:

Nice embroidered type 2006 scarf, licensed by FC Porto:

Sublimated type double face editions, non licensed by FC Porto, do tipo sublimado, on the theme "portist pride":

Embroidered type 2007 edition, licensed by FC Porto:

Another embroidered type 2007 edition, licensed by FC Porto:

Sublimated type double face scarf, perhaps edited in 2007, probably in Italy. Actually, I bought it from a seller in this country and "Dragos" means Dragons in Italian. As for the phrase "Fire the Dragos" should be in "Portugulian" or "Italianguese":

Embroidered type scarves edited by FC Porto delegation in Coimbra:

Interesting embroidered type issue, not licensed by FC Porto. In place of the letters "O" are the current and original crest:

Trials of the previous scarf, also of the embroidered type:

Finely embroidered type scarf, licensed by FC Porto:

Sublimated type scarf, double face, non licensed by FC Porto, of size much less than usual:

Sublimated type scarf, double face, non licensed by FC Porto:

Finely embroidered type scarf, given by F. C. do Porto to the business partners companies, referring to a match day:

Interesting set of embroidered type scarves, licensed by FC Porto, do tipo bordado, reproducing the crest of the club:

Nice embroidered type 2009 scarf, licensed by FC Porto, offered on purchasing an Easter egg (given to me by my friend Bruno and which I forwarded to my granddaughter):

Estádio das Antas (the old stadium of FC Porto - 1952/2003)

This scarf seems to be a sort of homage to the old stadium (Estádio das Antas), but it is not! The (very) stylized image of a stadium reffers to the new one, when it was not known that the new stadium would be called Estádio do Dragão (Stadium of the Dragon)!

So, as far as I know, the last scarf representing the old stadium (Estádio das Antas) is the following exemplar of 1997. (Put the pointer over the image to see the stadium.):
