UNIT DESCRIPTION

ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH TEAM ARE AT PRESENT TIME MEMBERS OF CEDEC-CENTRO DE ENGENHARIA CIVIL DA FACULDADE DE ENGENHARIA DA UNIVERSIDADE DO PORTO (FEUP).

AS A RESULT OF AN INTERNAL AND AN EXTERNAL EVALUATION A PROPOSAL OF SUB-DIVISION OF CEDEC WAS PRESENTED IN 1999 IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A SMALLER, MORE DYNAMIC, COHERENT AND MORE INTERNATIONAL RELATED RESEARCH GROUP. FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER THAT PROPOSAL SUCH SUB-DIVISION IS NOW POSSIBLE (FINAL PROPOSAL APRIL 2002).

THE PH.D MEMBERS OF THE NEW RESEARCH UNIT BELONG TO THE DIVISION OF HYDRAULICS, WATER RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE CIVIL ENG. DEPT. OF FEUP.

AT PRESENT THEY WORK WITH MORE THAN THIRTY YOUNG M. SC. AND PHD. D. STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS PREPARING THEIR DISSERTATIONS. THIS WILL ALLOW AN INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH APPROACH.

THE MEMBERS OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH TEAM HAVE MOVED TO NEW BUILDING FACILITIES FROM SEPT. 2000. THEY HAVE SUITABLE COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND THEY DEVELOP INTENSE UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE ACTIVITIES IN SEVERAL UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS BUT MAINLY AT FEUP. MOST OF THEM ARE INVOLVED IN INTENSE AND FORMAL RELATIONSHIP WITH EXTERNAL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS.

NEW LABORATORY FACILITIES ARE LOCATED IN A 1200 M2 BUILDING AND INCLUDE SEVERAL RESEARCH EQUIPMENT (PART OF THE EQUIPMENT IS SHARED WITH ONE OTHER RESEARCH UNIT (FLUID MECHANICS).

UNIT SUB-GROUPS

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH UNIT IS ORGANISED INTO FOUR PERMANENT SUB-GROUPS WHERE SEVERAL PROJECTS ARE INCLUDED.

THESE ARE UNDERGOING AND NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS (FCC, NATO, EU...), DISSERTATIONS, EXTERNAL CONTRACTS, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS INITIATIVES.

THE SUB-GROUPS AND THE MAIN ACTIVITIES ARE:

- COASTAL AND MARITIME STUDIES
(NUMERICAL MODELLING, PHYSICAL MODELLING, COASTAL MANAGEMENT, COASTAL AND HARBOUR STRUCTURES).

STRONG POINTS OF THE RESEARCH TEAM

THE RESEARCH UNIT WILL HAVE A STRONG LEADERSHIP. MEMBERS ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO PRODUCE HIGH QUALITY RESEARCH AND TO BE INVOLVED IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS. TROUGH AN ANNUAL AUTO-EVALUATION, MEMBERS THAT WILL NOT REACH ANNUAL PRODUCTION MINIMUM LEVELS (AT LEAST ONE PUBLICATION IN INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS, TWO PUBLICATIONS IN CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS WITH REFEREES AND TWO DISSERTATION SUPERVISIONS) WILL BE INVITED TO LEAVE THE GROUP.

THERE ARE NEW AND MODERN RESEARCH FACILITIES NAMELY A LARGE LABORATORY BUILDING (1200 M2) WITH WATER STORAGE (50 M3) AND HIGH FLOW SUPPLY SYSTEMS, WAVE TANK (28X12X1 M3), WATER FLUME (32X1X1.2 M3), SEVERAL HYDRAULIC AND FLUID MECHANICS COMPACT RESEARCH APPARATUS, ADVANCED MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS, COMPUTER SYSTEMS, WORKSHOP, MEETING ROOMS, LIBRARY AND INDIVIDUAL OFFICES FOR ALL THE PH. D RESEARCHERS.

NEW MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT FACILITIES HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED TO FCC UNDER TWO LARGE JOINT RE-EQUIPMENT PROPOSALS ("LABORATORY OF OPTICAL TECHNIQUES IN FLUID MECHANICS", THREE PARTNERS; "INFRA-STRUCTURES FOR EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON MARITIME HYDRAULICS", EIGHT PARTNERS).

THE RESEARCH GROUP HAS SUCCESSFUL PAST EXPERIENCE USING LABORATORY FACILITIES AND ADVANCED MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT NAMELY LASER-DOPPLER ANEMOMETRY.

THE RESEARCH GROUP HAS SUCCESSFUL PAST EXPERIENCE SHARING EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES WITH OTHER FEUP GROUPS (CIÊNCIA PROGRAMME 035/M790).

THE GROUP IS DEEPLY INVOLVED IN TWO M. SC. COURSES THAT CAN PROVIDE THEMES FOR RESEARCH AND YOUNG RESEARCHERS: THE M. SC. COURSE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND THE M. SC. COURSE ON FUNDAMENTALS AND APPLICATIONS OF FLUID MECHANICS.

THE RESEARCH UNIT IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE INSTITUTO DE HIDRÁULICA E RECURSOS HÍDRICOS HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO INCREASE THE RELATIONSHIP WITH NATIONAL AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND PRIVATE COMPANIES FOR CONSULTANCY IN CREATIVE MATTERS AND APPLIED RESEARCH.

THE MEMBERS OF THE RESEARCH UNIT ARE ACTIVE IN ORGANIZING INTERNATIONAL CONGRESSES (FOR INSTANCE LITTORAL 1994 IN LISBON AND LITTORAL 2002 IN PORTO) AND NATIONAL CONGRESSES (MORE THAN TWELVE, CONGRESSO DA ÁGUA, PORTO MARCH 2002, 800 ATTENDANTS).

WEAK  POINTS OF THE RESEARCH TEAM

THE PUBLICATION IN INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO THE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, NAMELY TROUGH THE PH. D. DISSERTATIONS AND PROJECTS CONCLUDED.

THE UNIT RESEARCH MEMBERS ARE STRONGLY INVOLVED IN OTHER ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES AND SOME OF THEM IN EXTERNAL ACTIVITIES  (NAMELY PUBLIC DUTIES) SO THE TIME PERCENTAGE DEDICATED TO RESEARCH IS LESS THAN IT SHOULD BE DESIRABLE.

THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE UNIT Ph.D. RESEARCHERS IS HIGH. THIS FACT IS BEING OVERCOMED BY THE INTEGRATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE PREPARING M.SC. AND PH D. DISSERTATIONS. THE NUMBER OF YEARS TO CONCLUDE A PH. D DEGREE IN HYDRAULICS AT FEUP SHOULD BE REDUCED FROM SEVEN YEARS (AVERAGE) TO FOUR YEARS.

ALL THE UNIT RESEARCHERS WITH PH. D. ARE CIVIL ENGINEERS. THEY ARE ASSISTANT PROFESSORS AND ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS AT THE GROUP OF HYDRAULICS, WATER RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT AT THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF FEUP. INTEGRATION OF EXTERNAL PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND NETWORK RESEARCH IS IMPROVING INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES.

SEVERAL RESEARCHERS OF THE UNIT ARE OFTEN INVITED FROM PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND PRIVATE COMPANIES FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE DUTIES.

THE BASIC SALARY PH.D. OF THE RESEARCHERS OF THE GROUP IS NOT ATTRACTIVE COMPARATIVELY TO PRIVATE JOBS AND THERE IS A STRONG EXTERNAL SEARCH FOR CIVIL ENGINEERS. FEW YOUNG CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE ATTRACTED BY RESEARCH DUE NON-COMPETITIVE SALARY LEVELS ALSO. IN CONTRAST WITH ALMOST OTHER SCIENTIFIC AREAS UNEMPLOYMENT FOR CIVIL ENGINEERS DOES NOT EXIST. THIS FACT SHOULD BE OVERCOME BY THE INTEGRATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE WITH OTHER BACKGROUNDS AND THE ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT IN NETWORKS.

JOINT APPLICATIONS

Joint application to FCT for a LABORATORY OF OPTICAL TECHNIQUES IN THE FLUID MECHANICS.

Three research groups (CEFT, CIEA and CEHRA) working in Transport Phenomena in Civil, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Departments of FEUP in order to provide them with capabilities in Laser-Doppler, Particle Image Velocimetry and Phase-Doppler Anemometry. It includes researchers also from Coimbra Engineering Polytechnic, Porto Engineering Polytechnic and Polytechnic Institute of Viseu. Research topics:

            - Viscoelastic flows in ducts, expansions and diffusers to develop turbulence models. These fluids are typical in the process industry;
            - Two and three-phase flows in vertical columns for the modelization of chemical reactors;
            - Confined jets of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids for applications in membrane separation processes of the food industry.
            - Single and two-phase flows in mechanically agitated reactors with and without aeration;
            - Hydrodynamic behaviour of wave breakers for coastal protection and open channel flows for applications in urban hydraulics;
            - Optimisation of bifurcations for piping networks;
            - Flows in circulating fluidised beds for optimisation of industrial fluidisation processes.

This strengthens and modernizes an infrastructure that was created in 1990 following the same philosophy: LTAMF, the Advanced Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, was set up by researchers of the above mentioned Engineering Departments at FEUP and was funded by Ciência programme (035/M/90). LTAMF has been a successful example of collaboration among researchers from different Departments, sharing experiences in related fields, research projects but especially sharing expensive equipment and facilities. LTAMF enabled the modernisation of research laboratories in Fluid Mechanics in the North of Portugal where many young researchers, now working in many industries and other universities and polytechnics, were trained over the last 11 years.

Joint application to FCT for an infrastructure for EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON MARITIME HYDRAULICS:
Scale model tests; maritime structures and sea transport; sea wave energy utilization; wave-current sediment interactions. Eight research groups:

- LNEC (Lisbon); CEHIDRO (Lisbon); IDMEC (Lisbon); IMAR (Coimbra); INETI (Lisbon); CEDEC/CEHRA (Porto); UETN (Lisbon) and MARETEC (Lisbon).

The submission of research projects, involving most of the consortium institutions to Portuguese and European calls for research proposals is to be promoted.

Several wave tanks and wave flumes are available. Different kinds of equipment and infrastructural facilities will be shared. This consortium includes all the Portuguese research groups (institutions) in the area of maritime hydraulics.
