This wonderfully located 17th century manor house is owned by a real Count, no less, and has been in his family’s hands since its inception. Indeed, the feeling of tradition and heritage here is palpable, yet the atmosphere is by no means stuffy or aristocratic - the Count himself, for example, will proudly show guests around his family home. The vistas it affords from its position high above the Lima valley are marvellous and certainly, the views of the vineyards and gardens outside the terrace are hard to beat. Yet Calheiros has so much more to offer than fine panoramas. The building itself is one of the most imposing and elegant in the region and just getting there is by way of a fine entrance with its illustrious gateway, beautiful tree-lined drive and stone fountain. The rooms themselves are excellent, whilst the interior is notable for its fine pieces of antique furniture and paintings. Horse riding can be arranged at the property and those interested in the art of the vine can indulge in winetasting or visiting the House’s own vineyards.
