Foreign stereographers / publishers - Underwood & Underwood assorted views

Such as happens with Keystone, it is relatively frequent to come across U&U cards that are difficult to classify. These cards may actually belong to so-called private sets, which the company is known to have produced on purpose for specific customers, such as "churches, schools and fraternities" [Darrah 1997, p. 48], but they may also belong to other sets which are not easily identifiable. The card mounts that I know are the usual beige and grey types exemplified below, although small variants of layout and printings are to be expected, among the various cards in this category.

Printed vertically on the right: "Works and Studios - Sun Sculpture, U&U, Trade Mark - Arlington, N. J., Littleton, N. H., Washington, D. C." No card number, but the caption and the copyright information (Copyright 1900 by Underwood & Underwood.") are printed horizontally on the lower right. The reverse repeats the caption, now in six languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Russian.

Card number, caption and the negative reference number are printed horizontally on the lower right. Judging from the caption, this card seems to belong to one of the private sets referred above: "Our party at Pena Castle, Cintra, Portugal."
