RoboCup is an international research and education initiative, attempting to foster Artificial Intelligence and Robotics research by providing a standard problem where a wide range of technologies can be integrated and examined, as well as being used for integrated project-oriented education.
For this purpose, RoboCup chose to use the Soccer game as a primary domain, and organizes every year The Robot World Cup Soccer Games and Conferences. Since 2000, the competitions include Search and Rescue robots, and more recently, started in 2007, the @Home competition aims at developing service and assistive robot technology with high relevance for future personal domestic applications.
Altogether, achieving a good performance in these competitions requires the integration of various technologies, including: autonomous agents design principles, multi-agent collaboration, real-time planning and control, Robotics, and sensor-fusion.
The RoboCup Federation proposed the ultimate goal of the RoboCup Initiative to be stated as follows: "By 2050, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players shall win a soccer game, complying with the official FIFA rules, against the winner of the most recent World Cup of Human Soccer."
More information about the RoboCup Federation as a whole, including links to other RoboCup National Committees, can be found at http://www.RoboCup.org/ .
Portugal is one one the most represented countries in RoboCup, and has a tradition of organizing Robotics competitions that dates back to 1995, including the organization of RoboCup2004. Also, a considerable number of Portuguese Research Institutions and Universities have groups working in Robotics.

The selection of national teams to the international RoboCupJunior event is essentially determined by two aspects, the results of the Portuguese Open (ROBOTICA) and the number of slots allocated by the international organization. This latter aspect is the sole responsibility of the international organization and results from a complex slot distribution process among more than 30 countries and 11 sub-leagues. Consequently, it is frequently the case that the slots we receive do not necessarily reflect the participation levels in our national event.
The National Committee will then use the results from the national event and contact teams in that order until the slots are filled with teams willing to participate in the international event.
Nevertheless, in order to maximize the number of schools involved in the selection, the National Committee will further apply the following limit. Only one team from each school can be selected in each competition (sub-league).
The National Committee will take full responsibility for deciding on the selection and its decision is irrevocable.
(Provisional selection. May be updated in case of teams deciding not to participate).
