Profile

• Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo was born in Porto, Portugal, on June 1st, 1951.
• He holds a second-cycle degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto (Licenciado), 1973, and a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wales (Swansea), 1982. Since 1996, holds the qualification title of 'Agregado' (habilitation) from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, where he is, since February 1998, Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering.
• His areas of interest, both in research and teaching, are in Process Systems Engineering, Instrumentation and Control.
• His other specific interest is in Higher Education - the Bologna Process and Engineering Education with special emphasis in Chemical Engineering Curricula and Education.
• His research activity is currently carried out within LEPAE - Laboratory for Process, Environmental and Energy Engineering, Research Unit of the Faculty of Engineering.
• He is Fellow of Ordem dos Engenheiros - Engineers Portugal, member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering, a founder member of the Portuguese Association for Automatic Control (APCA), a founder member of the recently created (2008) Portuguese Association of Engineering for Development and Humanitarian Assistance and member of several other Associations.
• he is Certified member “ING-PAED IGIP – International Engineering Educator” of IGIP – Internationale Gesellschaft für Ingenieurpädagogik (2011 - )

Teaching & Education interests and activities

• For the past thirty-five years he has been mainly involved in the teaching of Numerical Methods, Process Dynamics and Process Control & Instrumentation (www site in Portuguese), both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• he is currently Director of Studies of the doctoral programme in Chemical, Petrochemical and Refining Engineering, in association with University of Aveoro, University of Coimbra, Technical University Lisbon and New University Lisbon, together with the industrial companies of  AIPQR - Association of Chemical, Petrochemical and Refining Industries (2011 - )
• From July 2001 to December 2006 by appointement of the Dean, he was Director of Studies of the 5-year degree in Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto.
• As a consequence of the application of the Bologna Process agreements in the Portuguese Higher Education Area, during 2006, he co-ordinated within the Faculty of Engineering, the re-structuring of Chemical Engineering programmes that led to the new 5-year integrated Master degree in Chemical Engineering
• From March 2001 until May 2003, by appointement of the Dean, he was Director of Studies of the M.Sc. degree in Automation, Instrumentation and Control of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto.
• From January 1999, he is the representative of Engineers Portugal in the Working Party on Education of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering.
• In August 2006 he was elected by his peers to serve as Chairman of the Working Party for the period September 2007 - September 2010.
• Within this Working Party he has helped in creating and launching, in June 2001, the New European Web Site on Chemical Engineering Education, within which he co-ordinates the Portuguese Node 'Chemical Engineering Education in Portugal' (in co-operation with Prof. Eugénio Ferreira from University of Minho).

Research interests and industrial co-operation

• His research interests, for more than thirty years now, are directed to problems of modelling, optimization and control of chemical and biochemical processes. Complementary, with the advent of cheap computers for process analysis and operation, his activity has been directed to the application of computer-aided process operation methodologies to industrial processes.
