B.) Cultural Guide

1. Museu Casa de Portinari – Caminhos de Portinari.

(Cândido Portinari’s House Museum Art Tour – “Portinari’s Paths”)

If you didn’t know, now you do: Brodowski, in the Ribeirão Preto Metropolitan Region, is a hometown of the famous painter Cândido Portinari. He is considered one of the most important Brazilian painters as well as a prominent and influential practitioner of the neo-realism style in painting.

Located in the northeastern region of the state of São Paulo, the city of Brodowski has its history deeply linked to the expansion projects of the Mogiana Railways Company in the late 19th century. Cutting the lands of the Belo Monte Farm, between Jardinópolis and Batatais, the “Engenheiro Brodowski” station – later only “Brodowski” – was inaugurated in September 1894. The name is a tribute to the Polish engineer Alexandre Brodowski, responsible for forwarding the order, along with other local farmers, to Cia. Mogiana for the construction of the station. This city of 23,780 inhabitants, which is just 35 kilometers from Ribeirão Preto, currently receives about 48,000 tourists per year. Known as the “Pineapple Land”, today it no longer produces the rich fruits that bear its flag, but retains the memory of being the cradle of the greatest Brazilian painter – Candido Portinari.

Rich in Cultural Tourism, Brodowski city has important attractions such as:

· Museu Casa de Portinari (Portinari’s House Museum): Former residence of Cândido Portinari in Brodowski, the Casa de Portinari Museum represents the artist’s strong connection with his homeland, origins and family ties. It is the place where he performed his experiments with mural paintings and deepened his technique over the years.

· Capela de Santo Antônio (St. Anthony’s Chapel): Located in Candido Portinari Square, it was the first parish church of the municipality. The Chapel houses the oil painting on canvas Saint Anthony carrying the baby Jesus in his arms, made by the great artist. According to family members, the work was done by the painter to pay a promise made for the restoration of the health of his son, João Cândido. As a condition of the donation of the canvas, Portinari asked that it should never be taken from the chapel.

·Capela da Nona (Chapel of the Ninth): In 1940 Portinari had a chapel built next to the house of grandmother Pelegrina, who, due to her age and ill health, could not get to the church to pray. On the walls are the grandmother’s favorite saints, portrayed by the artist with the face of friends and relatives.

· Praça dos Expedicionários / Igreja Matriz “Nossa Senhora Aparecida (Expeditionary Square / “Nossa Senhora Aparecida” Mother Church): In the Expeditionary Square, where the Mother Church is located, the granite monument was erected in honor of the city’s patron saint, Our Lady Aparecida. Two obelisks were erected in the public square to mark the participation of Brodowski’s sons in military campaigns.

· Antiga Estação Ferroviária (Old Railway Station): The “Engenheiro Brodowski” station dating from 1894 was built before the first chapel, where the whole process of the city began. It is next to her that the “Primo Baggio” bus terminal was installed. In the station is the exhibition “The Brodowski Station, Historical Heritage”, rescuing the railway memory of the interior of São Paulo.

· Praça das Artes (Arts Square): place where visitors can check out works by artist Adélio Sarro, whose sculptures honor Portinari, the Immigrants, the coffee shop and the railways.

· Seminário Maria Imaculada (Mary Immaculate Seminary): Its foundation stone laid in December 1952 at the initiative of the Bishop December 1961. With a built area of 16,000 square meters, the Seminary occupies a small area of the initial 44 acres of the former Silver Farm.

Being in Brodowski and Ribeirão Preto region and not experiencing the ‘Caminhos de Portinari’ (‘Portinari Paths‘) tour is the same as going to Rome and not seeing The Pope.

The Portinari Paths’ tour is a small expression of Portinari roots and origins, and it is a way of connecting the landscapes of the city of Brodowski, as a territory of memory of artist Cândido Portinari and the community, which will broaden the understanding of the memories of his past as recurring and referential themes in his art work. This tour also allows the visitor to know the simple truths and the great feelings linked to the strong presence of his homeland, his place of refuge and inspiration, in the painter’s life and artworks.

The path starts at the Museu Casa de Portinari (Portinari’s House Museum) and then to other places, which are: The Candido Portinari Square, The Chapel of St. Anthony, Lauro J. Almeida Pinto Bandstand, The Old Train Station and The Public Animal Drinking Fountain.
