Aurélio Campilho is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, FEUP – Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE – The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the Department of Systems Design, Faculty of Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada (2002-2008). For several years, he also served as President of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP), which is a member of the IAPR. He was the Director of Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at FEUP (PDEEC) (2010/2016) and EEC co-responsible for the dual PhD – Program Carnegie-Mellon (USA) | Portugal.

He is responsible for the Master degree on Bioengineering Courses: Introduction to Scientific Programming, Biomedical Image Analysis and Computer-aided Diagnosis. In PDEEC he responsible for the course Image Analysis and Recognition.

From January 2014, he is the coordinator of the Center for Biomedical Engineering Research from INESC TEC – Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science.

His current research interests include the areas of biomedical engineering, medical image analysis, image processing and computer vision, particularly in Computer-aided Diagnosis applied in several imaging modalities, including ophthalmic images, carotid ultrasound imaging and computed tomography of the lung.

He was a member of the team at the inception of the first research institute in Portugal in BME at the University of Porto: the Biomedical Engineering Institute (INEB). In 1994-2000, he was INEB President and research coordinator. Under his leadership, INEB came to be recognized as “Excellent” by an international evaluation panel promoted by the Portuguese Ministry of Science and one of the first 3 research institutes to be recognized at the highest level in the country in all sciences, a standard that has been maintained since 2000. He promoted the creation of the first ever MSc (and later PhD) degree in Biomedical Engineering in Portugal. He was one of the promoters of the M.Sc. Bioengineering degrees at FEUP and ICBAS (Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar) from University of Porto.

He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and of the Machine Vision Applications Journal. He is the General Chair of the series of International Conferences on Image Analysis and Recognition (ICIAR). Prof. Campilho served as organizer of several special issues and conferences.

He authored one book (with two editions), co-edited 21 books and published more than 250 papers in international journals and conferences. He is a EAMBES Fellow.
