Invited Speakers

Adriano Ribeiro

Affliation: Continental-Mabor
Topic: All the things you can do with a PhD

After graduating in Chemical Engineering in FEUP in 2003, Adriano Ribeiro pursued the academic pathway by starting his PhD in the same field. During this time he took the chance to experience both academic research and teaching. When he was about to finish his thesis he joined Continental where he is now heading the Material Product Industrialization Department of Continental-Mabor, the tire plant in Lousado, Portugal. Back in 2007 Adriano Ribeiro was one of the 3 % of the PhD population to work for the business sector. Although the number is slowing growing, the number of PhDs that transfer from the Academia to the business is still very low. This session will focus on some of the reasons that contribute to this low number, why a PhD graduate should pursue a professional experience in the business filed and how he can improve his chances of having one.

Tiago Sotto Mayor

Affliation: Protection and Physiology Laboratory - Empa, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology
Topic: Research as a career – the role of different skills

Tiago Sotto Mayor is a Scientist in the Protection and Physiology Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa/Switzerland), and an Adjunct Researcher in the Transport Phenomena Research Centre (CEFT) at the Engineering Faculty of Porto University (FEUP). He has a degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering from FEUP, and a Doctoral degree from the same institution. Between 2007 and 2013, he was the Research Coordinator of the Product Optimization and Characterization Laboratory at the Centre for Nanotechnology and Smart Materials (CeNTI/Portugal). His current research at Empa bridges different fields of science (e.g. Engineering, Biology, Physiology or Materials Science), with a focus on the modelling and simulation of transport processes at different scales (from transport problems within the human body to its exchanges to the surrounding environments, from motion and mass exchanges of bacteria to the performance of smart products used for effective body protection). He is the author of over 30 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and, in collaboration with several academic institutions, has supervised several Master and PhD theses. In his keynote, Tiago Sotto Mayor will address different skills and competences that have been found of importance for the development of a career in research – from the background education to the ability to communicate, from the understanding of societal challenges to the logics of the funding policies – as tools for the generation of solutions.

Oral Presentations

In the detailed session schedule is information about the oral presentations from the morning and afternoon sessions from the Symposium on Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Each presentation has a maximum duration of 10 minutes and there will be 2 minutes for questions.

There will be a computer and a projection system available. Authors should bring their presentations in a USB disk and copy them to the room computer in the beginning of each session.

Poster Presentations

In the detailed session schedule is information about the poster presentations from the Symposium on Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Placards for poster presentations will be available.

Authors should bring their posters printed. We will provide push pins to attach the poster to the placards. The maximum poster size allowed is A0 (841mm x 1189mm).

Placards will be located in corridor B next to the coffee break area and each placard will have a label indicating the placement of each poster. Posters should be placed before 10:30 on the 12th June and should be removed on same day until 19:00 (after that time, all posters will be gathered and stored by the Organizing Committee).

The authors should be present during the poster sessions to explain and discuss their work with other participants.
