Symposium on Sustainable Energy Systems
The Sustainable Energy Systems Doctoral Program (SES PhD) is a three- to four-year degree jointly offered at each of the Portuguese Institutions participating in the MIT Portugal Sustainable Energy Systems Program. The objective of the PhD Program on Sustainable Energy Systems is to use a multi-disciplinary approach to educate a new generation of sustainability-aware leaders with expertise in energy systems and economics. A focus on energy system design and analysis, research, and leadership and entrepreneurship provides graduates with the tools to be at the forefront of sustainable energy systems development.
The Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Energy Systems covers the Doctoral Congress of Engineering registration costs for students of FEUP enrolled in this Doctoral Programme who register by June 1st.
Papers can be submitted in the following areas:
Eduardo de Oliveira Fernandes, 71 years old, Professor Emeritus of the
University of Porto, Portugal, PhD in Applied Sciences at the Federal
Institute of Technology (Lausanne,Switzerland). Professor at the Faculty of
Engineer for almost 40 years years, devoted his career to teaching, research,
consulting and public activities related to energy and environment.
Vice Rector of the University of Porto 1986-91), served twice at the Portuguese
Government as Secretary of State for Environment (1984-85) and for Energy and
Innovation (2001-2). Pioneer in Passive Solar Technologiesin Buildings, Indoor
Air Quality and Energy and Environment in the Urban Space, chaired the process
of Buildings Thermal Regulations for Portugal (1981-2006), was responsible for
the energy concept of EXPO'98 in Lisboa and elaborated the Government Program
E4 (2001) that led to the explosion of electricity production of renewable
based electricity in Portugal. Vice-President of PLEA
(Passive and Low Energy Architecture (1987-1992) and Vice-President and
President of ISES- International Solar Energy Society (1991-1997) he is ASHRAE Fellow.
The Symposium on Sustainable Energy Systems will take place on Thursday 11th June in room B033.

Each presentation has a maximum duration of 15 minutes and there will be 5 minutes for questions.
Rooms for parallel sessions (Symposia) will have a computer and a projection system available.
Authors have to bring their presentations in a USB disk.
Authors who bring the presentations in their laptops must go to the reception – at least 30min before the beginning of the session - and request support.
Presenters who need to leave early or make program arrangements, must speak to Symposia Chairs before the beginning of the sessions.
The authors should be present during the poster exhibition in the afternoon on 11th June to explain and discuss it with other participants.
Placards for poster presentations will be available. Authors should bring their posters printed. We will provide push pins to attach the poster to the placards. The maximum poster size allowed is A0 (841mm x 1189mm). Placards will be located in corridor B next to the coffee break area and each placard will have a label indicating the placement of each poster. Posters should be placed after 11:00 on the 11th June and should be removed on the 11th June until 19:00 (after that time, all posters will be gathered and stored by the Organizing Committee).
