Workshop 2 – “My career with a PhD: to open up or close a gap?”

-> 15th June, 14h00 – 15h00, room B323

face-to-face, in english (in case there is a non-portuguese speaking person)

PROGRAM: FEUP Talent Unit is responsible for promoting the interaction between students and companies at the academia and the management of alumni relations. One of our main goals is to promote different projects and initiatives to help students and graduates develop or enhance their skills.

With this session you’ll have the opportunity to get to know some of the projects that are being held by FEUP Talent Unit, namely some specific projects specifically designed for PhD students.

Also, at this session you will have the chance to have a moment to think about where your PhD is as part of your career path and life design.

What can I do with it? Is this a step to open up or am I looking to close a gap? Do I need a plan B?

Do not miss this change to share your concerns with other PhD students and think ahead about your choices and goals.

SPEAKERS:

Marta Rodrigues – Working at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto since 2009 is the head of the Talent Unit of FEUP since 2020. Experienced in the area of business relations, project management and event organization.

João Henrique Almeida – Psychologist, 33 years old and born in Viseu – a small city in the heart of Portugal. Working at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, certified in career management and holding a master in Clinical and Health Psychology from University of Aveiro as well as a specialization in advanced coaching from University of Porto. Workshop 5 – “Introduction to Git: Mastering Version Control”

-> 15th June, 14h00-15h00, room I-105

face-to-face, in english (in case there is a non-portuguese speaking person)

SPEAKER: Diogo P. Cordeiro

PROGRAM:

Git is a powerful version control software that helps you to keep track of different versions of your code (or other types of text as your thesis), collaborate on your code (or reports) with other people, and experiment with new changes to your code. It’s used in industry and in many open-source projects. This tutorial will provide participants with a hands-on opportunity to learn the fundamental concepts and leverage the features offered by Git.

The tutorial will cover the following topics:

  1. What is Git?
    1. Configuring Git and setting up GPG for secure commits;
    2. Initialising a Git repository;
    3. Adding files to the repository;
    4. Committing changes;
    5. Checking the status.
  2. Tags
    1. Utilising tags for marking relevant points in the project’s history.
  3. Diff and Patch
    1. Understanding and applying differences between versions using diff and patch.
  4. Remote Repositories
      1. Cloning remote repositories;
      2. Pushing changes to a remote repository;
      3. Pulling changes from a remote repository.
  5. Branching and Merging
        1. Resetting changes in the repository;
        2. Creating and managing branches;
        3. Merging branches.
  6. A brief look at the Git Internals

Workshop 6 – “Spiking Neural Networks: Fundamentals and Applications”

-> 15th June, 14h00-15h00, room I 025

face-to-face, in english (in case there is a non-portuguese speaking person)

SPEAKER: João Nunes

PROGRAM:

Neuromorphic computing tries to mimic the biological neuron, where information is transmitted in the form of spikes, thus being more energy efficient than standard hardware. Moreover, deep learning breakthroughs are typically correlated with increase in model parameters and computing power, which represents a large carbon footprint and is believed to have diminishing returns.  But neuromorphic neural networks, namely, spiking neural networks (SNNs), due to sparseness of spike trains and asynchronous processing, represent a more energy-efficient alternative and could replace traditional artificial neural networks in many applications like edge devices or event-driven systems such as autonomous driving. However, as activation functions in SNN models are non-differentiable, stochastic gradient descent (SGD) with the typical backpropagation algorithm cannot be directly used to train SNNs. As such, unsupervised learning with spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) or backpropagation with surrogate gradients have emerged as proper alternatives. In this introductory hands-on workshop, we will learn the main principles of SNNs, including coding strategies, activation functions, and BP with surrogate gradients. Finally, we will implement SNN models for image classification tasks. This workshop thus concerns a timely topic where participants are expected to gain some intuition and practical insights regarding the growing field of SNN research.
