The symposium on “Sustainable Energy Systems” will be held in the scope of the 5th Doctoral Congress  Engineering (DCE23) which will be hosted at FEUP, Porto, Portugal on the 15th and 16th of June 2023.

…………………………………

The Sustainable Energy Systems Doctoral Program (SES PhD) is a four-year degree, where the Departments of Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering work together at each institution participating in the MIT Portugal partnership (FEUP, ISEG, IST and Coimbra University), intending to support the information exchange and the knowledge advances within national and international participating universities and institutions.

The objective of the PhD Program on Sustainable Energy Systems is to prepare highly skilled researchers with the competences required for the development and analysis of energy systems; considering technical, environmental, economic and social factors. Forming individuals capable of autonomous research work for the academic and industrial field, to bring value for their organizations, using a multi-disciplinary approach to educate a new generation of aware leaders with expertise in sustainable energy systems.

The focus on different fields involving sustainable energy system, from design to analysis, leadership and entrepreneurship, provides graduates with the tools to succeed in their respective fields.

The symposium will occur within the parallel sessions of the Doctoral Congress in Engineering and it will be an excellent opportunity to share ongoing work or results of PhD or Master’s thesis.

The symposium on Sustainable Energy Systems welcomes the submission of abstracts that include relevant themes within the Energy and Sustainability scope, namely:

  • Energy Planning, Market regulation and Environmental Policies

This section aggregates change driving research topics that contribute towards sustainable societies in terms of energy use. Energy planning issues, modelling, analysis and design. Proposed improvements in energy policies related to energy efficiency, renewable energies, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Energy market, regulation, and sustainable development. Three essential areas to promote reliable, affordable, clean, integrated energy systems in the future.

  • Sustainable Cities, People and Built Environment

The concept for sustainable cities relies on the available resources and their efficient use, particularly in terms of energy. Urban communities depend on the built environment for shelter and comfort; due to this fact, focused attention should be given to the following research topics: Sustainable rehabilitation of buildings from urban areas, microgeneration of renewable energy and urban metabolism. Fields of knowledge essential for the development of innovative solutions or finding possible areas of improvements within this context, while accounting for the diversified sociodemographic and geographical features of each area.

  • Eletric power grids for a decarbonized economy

The decarbonization of the economy is a fundamental step to tackle climate change. This new paradigm relies on a drastic change of the electric power system with a massive integration of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources, fostering sector coupling and a broad deployment of high-energy efficiency technologies at demand-side in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Focal research areas include:

  • Operation and control of converter-dominated electric power grids;
  • Innovative efforts to monitor, manage and control the currently changing power grids;
  • Renewable energy generation, energy storage and end-user approaches;
  • Information technology and “big data” applications for enhancing the performance of energy networks in smart grids;
  • Smart mobility and energy demand technologies;
  • Multi-energy networks and renewable gases.
