GENERIC OBJECTIVES

M.EC intends to train Engineers capable of conceiving, designing and managing Civil Engineering systems, structures and works, applying updated and adequate analysis methodologies, materials, equipment and processes, with respect for Ethics, Environment and the best interests of the Community. For this, it offers a training that reconciles:
+ complementary training to the First Degree, very comprehensive in the major scientific and technical areas of Civil Engineering, with in-depth assessment of its essential training aspects;
+ a specialization in one of the scientific and technical areas of Civil Engineering.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This study cycle aims to ensure that students obtain:

+ Advanced knowledge involving, in particular, applied scientific and technological domains of Civil Engineering. It is intended to ensure a complementary training to the Degree in Civil Engineering in the areas of Structures and Geotechnics, Construction, Territory Planning and Transport and Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment, including advanced knowledge in relevant aspects.

+ Ability to perform all Civil Engineering Acts, with the graduates of this CE able to be admitted by the Order of Engineers with E2 Qualification Degree.

+ Skills that enable to conceive, design and manage Civil Engineering systems, structures and works, with critical
thinking in decision making; communication skills and teamwork, and a vocation for lifelong learning.

ACCREDITATION
This study programme is accredited by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES).

DIPLOMA

The Master in Civil Engineering (M.EC) results from the division of the previous Integrated Master in Civil Engineering (MIEC) of FEUP into two independent study cycles, in order to comply with article 19th of Decree-Law no. n.º 65/2018, August 16th, with M.EC being the 2nd of these cycles. M.EC is structured in 4 semesters, with a total 120 ECTS, culminating in the completion of a Dissertation, which takes place in the last semester of the study cycle. The study plan consists of:

+ a master’s course, which does not award a degree, consisting of an organized set of curricular units corresponding to 90 ECTS credits. It offers a master’s degree diploma (not a degree) in Civil Engineering in one of the 4 specializations: Structures and Geotechnics; Buildings; Land Planning and Transport; Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment. The possibility of awarding a diploma that does not confer a degree will only occur in the 2nd year;

+ a dissertation of an original scientific nature and specifically carried out for this purpose, corresponding to 30 of the total of 120 ECTS credits in the study cycle; the public presentation of the dissertation will allow obtaining a master’s degree in Civil Engineering in one of the 4 specializations: Structures and Geotechnics; Buildings; Land Planning and Transports; Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment.

Students will be able to take a semester on the move, in the 2nd semester of the 1st year or in the 1st semester of the 2nd year, at a school with which there is an exchange agreement. It is also possible to carry out an additional semester in mobility to carry out the dissertation, with the public presentation at FEUP.

The degree will be awarded by FEUP.

Student Groups and Associations

IACES
CIVIL'in
NTIEC

IACES

Existing internationally since 1989, IACES – International Association of Civil Engineering Students has been in Portugal, in Porto, since 1995. Its mission is to promote the exchange at technical, social and cultural level between Civil Engineering students from all over the world, through courses, lectures and international congresses and promoting the relationship between students and professionals in the field in order to obtain added value, as future civil engineers, with a view to better integration into the labor market.

CIVIL’in

CIVIL’in is a welcoming program whose mission is to integrate and guide new students, enabling their best reception, reception and integration. Each new student is assigned a “tutor” who will accompany him throughout the year, through the sharing of experiences and notes and clarification of doubts. Beginning in the 2015/16 school year, this idea came from the students themselves, in order to help newcomers to overcome the feeling of fear and disorientation that can arise when entering college.

NTIEC

NTIEC – Information Technologies in Civil Engineering Group aims to promote a set of initiatives in order to raise students’ awareness of the importance of greater knowledge of the role of information technologies in the field of civil engineering, fostering interest in collaborative development of calculation tools that allow a solid learning of the concepts approached and increasing the interest in the more informed use of the available computational applications.

Employability

The following data is based on the FEUP 2020 Employability Survey and relate to MIEC graduates in 2018/2019, having responded to the survey 64% of a total of 90 graduates.
