GENERIC OBJECTIVES
The M.EMAT aims to educate graduates for professional careers in any area of Materials Engineering.

To achieve this objective, M.EMAT provides advanced education in materials engineering, treating the complete life cycle of materials, with two specialisations: a more generalised education in materials and another in metallurgy.

M.EMAT offers a background in materials science and technology, focusing on product design, processing technologies and characterisation techniques, addressing all classes of materials in the specialisation on materials and, more specifically, metallic materials in the case of the specialisation in metallurgy.

This is complemented with education in management and interdisciplinary competencies, a factor of recognised importance in the business world. The intention is to maintain the strong connection with the business community, supporting the completion, in the last semester of the SC, of a dissertation in companies in the area of Materials Engineering.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The advanced education in Materials Engineering proposed by M.EMAT prepares engineers to meet the challenges of modern society:

  • to think and operate in the broad field of Materials Engineering;
  • to prevent, analyse and solve engineering problems in diverse contexts, including the most relevant social, scientific and ethical
    issues;
  • to develop optimisation and innovation projects for materials and processes, and assess their economic, social and
    environmental impact;
  • to interact with peers within multidisciplinary teams, in a collaborative, ethically and professionally responsible manner.

THIS MASTER ALLOWS
To educate graduates in advanced knowledge of Materials Science and Technology, focusing on product design methodologies, processing technologies and characterisation techniques, deepening the specialisation chosen by the student (Materials or Metallurgy).

INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING
M.EMAT also promotes education in management and interdisciplinary competences, a factor of recognised importance in the business world. The study cycle is composed of 3 ECTS devoted to optional courses related to Transversal Competences.

DIPLOMA

The M.EMAT results from the subdivision of the previous Integrated Master in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MIEMM), taught by FEUP, in two sequential study cycles, in order to comply with the 19th  article of Decree-Law n.º 65/2018 from 16th August, with M.EMAT being the 2nd  of these cycles. M.EMAT is organized in 4 semesters, totaling 120 ECTS – culminating with the completion of a Dissertation, which takes place in the last semester of the study plan.

The cycle of studies consists of:

  • a masters course, not conferring a degree, consisting of an organized set of curricular units corresponding to 90 ECTS credits. Confers a master’s degree diploma (non-degree awarding) in Materials Engineering in one of the s specializations: Materials or Metallurgy. The possibility of awarding a diploma that does not confer a degree will only occur in the 2nd year.
  • a dissertation of a scientific nature, original and specifically carried out for this purpose, corresponding to 30 of the total of 120 ECTS credits in the cycle of studies; the defense in public tests of the dissertation will allow obtaining a master’s degree in Materials Engineering, in one of the 2 specializations: Materials or Metallurgy.

ACCREDITATION
The study cycle is accredited by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES – Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior).

Job Opportunities

Graduates in Materials Engineering can pursue professional activity in Industry, in the Services or in R&D, being able to perform a professional career in any area of the Materials Engineering.

The main professional opportunities cover a large number of companies that require expert engineers in metal, polymer, ceramics, composites and biomaterials, materials production and processing, foundry, heat treatments, corrosion and coating applications, component design, inspection, system tests and certification, environmental management and waste treatments, operation management and continuous improvement.

The Materials Engineer, with sound training in Materials Science and Engineering, is fully prepared to play an important role in core Engineering areas such as Production, Project, Planning, Logistics, Commerce, Environment, Quality, Management, Continuous Improvement and R&I&I.

Employability

The following data is based in the Employment Survey FEUP 2020 and refer to the graduates of MIEMM – Integrated Master in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering – in 2018/2019. 55% from a total of 20 graduates have answered the survey.

Partnerships with companies

In accordance with the Department’s strategy, based on a close relationship with the business sector, M.EMAT provides the development of Masters dissertations  in an industrial environment, supports short duration industrial internships, organizes study visits to companies and promotes events that enable interaction between students and industrials working in the most diverse Materials Engineering operational areas.

The majority of the dissertations undertaken during the second semester are carried out in an industrial context, which is one of the advantages of this programme.

Specially noteworthy is the recognition by industry of the quality of training provided by M.EMAT. This is shown by the awarding of prizes to the best students on the course.  The “Professor Horácio Maia e Costa” prize is awarded by FERESPE (Fundação de Ferro e Aço, Lda.), to the graduate with the highest grade, and the “CMW Foundries” prize to the best student in Foundry course, awarded by Foundry Cruz Martins e Wahl, Lda.

Some companies where students have worked on their dissertations during the last year are included in the following list:

ESTIEM

NucMMat

The Students Group of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (NucMMat) has the purpose of promoting studies, research and development of several fields of knowledge, namely in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, by boosting activities that promote knowledge and experiences. To promote cooperation between  the industrial sector and the academy, stimulating the participation of their members in the preparation of projects for different areas. To promote the exchange and cooperation between individuals, associations and national and foreign institutions, that follow similar objectives of this association. In their objectives, this group may organize nonprofit exhibitions, meetings, workshops, conferences, seminars or other relevant activities for the NucMMat.

ESTIEM

ADEMM

The main objectives of the Association of Former Students of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (ADEMM) are to boost social and professional connections between their members, to promote the improvement of the professional training of former students of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department by organizing conferences, courses and meetings and to promote technical and professional information; to manage actions that contribute to put their members on the labor market, specially the recent graduates that are searching for their first job; to characterize, periodically, in global terms, the professional activity of their members; to cooperate with Ordem dos Engenheiros on the defense of specific professional interest of their members and to build a connection bond between the School and the job.
