Within Lancaster University, Michael Pidd is Associate
Dean (Research) in the 6* Management School as well as a Professor in the
Department of Management Science.
Outside the University he is Chair of the Business & Management
Panel for the 2008 RAE, Chair of COPIOR (the Committee of Professors in
OR) and Chair of the Leadership Team of the recently formed Christian Academic
Network.
During 2004 he was a Research Fellow in the UK's Advanced Institute
for Management Research.
His academic interests include:
Discrete event simulation, most recently looking at how the world-wide
web may
be used to develop and run simulations
How people develop and use models in OR/MS to support decision making.
How OR and analytical methods are used in the public sector.
His communication:
Modelling & simulation to support public policy: performance
measurement & improvement: Simulation modelling has been a great
success in helping public bodies to improve their performance. However,
most successes have
been at the tactical level (e.g. improving out-patient clinics)
and very little simulation modelling has been done to support the development
of public policy. Targets and measurement are a fundamental part of public
policy, certainly in the UK, the aim being to improve performance. However,
targets and performance measures often badly designed and their use could
be much improved by the deliberate use of modelling approaches. The paper
discusses these issues and highlights some work in progress which aims
to remedy this situation.
