Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto
(FEUP) history can be traced back to the XVIIIth century, when the large
sea trade, taking place at Porto, attracted pirates and corsairs who attacked
the helpless merchant ships. Trying to face this situation, King D. José
I ordered the construction of 2 war frigates, as well as a school to instruct
the officers and crew. The years was 1762. The newly founded Nautical school
later evolved to a Polytechnic Academy, and in 1926 assumed the designation
of Faculdade de Engenharia. In the year 2000, the faculty
abandoned the obsolete building that had occupied for 63 years, and moved
to modern installations in Paranhos.

The city of Porto is the largest of Northern Portugal. It's Historic
Centre, classified as World
Heritage by UNESCO, is one of the most attractive entertainment venues
for visitors, providing a rich variety of monuments and ordinary dwelling,
from different periods stretching back as far as the 14th century.
The city of Porto and its river, Douro, cannot
be dissociated. The Douro valley, with its lovely terraces of vineyards
clinging to the hillsides, is the kingdom of the famous Port Wine
and offers visitors spectacular views.
From springtime till Autumn many festivals and fairs follow in rapid
succession in the whole Northern Portugal. June 24 is Porto largest annual
festival, celebrating the city patron, São João (Saint
John).

How to get to
Porto:
-
The city of Porto is easily accessible from abroad. Several airlines offer
direct service to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport,
located about 12 Km from the City Centre.
From the Airport to the City:
By bus:
STCP operates
bus lines between Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport and
different parts of the city. Individual fare is €1.20. AEROBUS
is a relatively fast connection between the Airport and downtown Porto,
including the city's leading Hotels, every 30 minutes, from 07h45m till
19h15m. The fare is €4.00 and the ticket is valid on all STCP lines,
until midnight of the same day.
By taxi:
The average fare between the Airport and the city centre is around
€20.00. Within the city, the rates charged are those shown in the
meter at the end of the ride. For other areas the fare is calculated at
€0.35 per Km after leaving the city limits. Any tolls (round trip)
are paid by the client. On Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays, and
Monday to Friday between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., a 20% rate applies to normal
fares.
Volumes exceeding 55x36x20cm needing to be carried in the luggage compartment
are charged €1,50.
How to reach
the conference:
-
Faculty of Enginnering of Univiersity of Porto's
(FEUP) is distante around 4 kilometres from the city centre and can be
reached in several ways:
By car:
The esiest way is to get the circle around the town (via de cintura
interna) and follow the way to HOSPITAL DE SÃO JOÃO,
in the direction to BRAGA. Hospital de São João is very near
FEUP, anyone can inform you if you ask. The problem is usually space to
park. See a map for help here.
By Metro:
This would be the most interesting way for reaching the conference,
but unfortunately the FEUP station is not yet ready. Anyhow, if you like
to walk 300 m, take the Metro YELLOW line (Line D) in the centre of the
town in the direction of "P. Universitário" and get out in this
last stop. Once there, ask to anyone for Faculdade de Engenharia (or Hospital
de São João). See a map for help
here.
By bus:
Can search for a bus-stop of the bus number 6. See a
map for help here.
