A ordem CARNIVORA inclui mais de 260 espécies de mamíferos placentários. É a ordem mais diversificada da classe dos mamíferos abrangendo desde a doninha (Mustela nivalis) com um peso de apenas 25 g e 11 cm de tamanho, até ao urso-polar (Ursus maritimus) que pode pesar até 1000 kg, ou ao elefante-marinho-meridional (Mirounga leonina), cujos machos adultos pesam até 5000 kg e medem até 6,9 m de comprimento.

The diverse order CARNIVORA includes over 260 species of placental mammals. Carnivorans are the most diverse in size of any mammalian order, ranging from the Least Weasel (Mustela nivalis), at as little as 25 grams and 11 cm, to the Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) which can weigh up to 1,000 kg, or to the Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina) whose adult males weigh up to 5,000 kg and measure up to 6.9 m in length.

FELIDAE é a família biológica dos gatos e um membro desta família chama-se um felídeo. Os felídeos são os animais mais estritamente carnívoros das nove famílias da ordem CARNIVORA. O felídeo mais popular é o gato doméstico, que há cerca de 10000 anos vive associado a nós, os humanos, mas a família inclui todas as espécies selvagens incluindo os grandes gatos como o leão, tigre, leopardo e jaguar.

FELIDAE is the biological family of the cats; a member of this family is called a felid. Felids are the most strictly carnivorous of the nine mammal families in the order CARNIVORA. The most familiar felid is the Domestic Cat, which first became associated with humans about 10,000 years ago, but the family includes all other wild cats including the big cats.

O gato, também conhecido como o gato doméstico (Felis catus) é um pequeno mamífero carnívoro com actividade crepuscular que muitas vezes é valorizado pelos seres humanos pela companhia que proporciona e a sua capacidade de caçar animais nocivos. O gato associou-se com os seres humanos há pelo menos 9500 anos.

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from other felines, is a small carnivorous species of crepuscular mammal that is often valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to hunt vermin. It has been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years.

O leão (Panthera leo) é um dos quatro grandes felinos do gênero Panthera. Pesando os maiores machos mais do que 250 kg, o leão é segundo maior felino a seguir ao tigre. Actualmente, os leões selvagens estão confinados à África subsariana e a uma população vestigial criticamente ameaçada no noroeste da Índia, depois de ter desaparecido do Norte de África, Médio Oriente e da Ásia ocidental em tempos históricos.

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With exceptionally large males exceeding 250 kg in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East and western Asia in historic times.

O jaguar, conhecido no Brasil como onça-pintada (Panthera onca) é o terceiro maior felino depois do tigre e do leão, mas com a mais poderosa dentada. Actualmente, o habitat do jaguar estende-se do México ao Paraguai e norte da Argentina.

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion but with the most powerful bite. The jaguar's present range extends from Mexico to Paraguay and northern Argentina.

Atingindo um máximo de 4 m de comprimento total e pesando até 300 kg, as maiores subespécies do tigre são de dimensão comparável aos maiores felinos extintos.

The tiger (Panthera tigris) is the largest of four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. Native to much of eastern and southern Asia, the tiger is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore. Reaching up to 4 m in total length and weighing up to 300 kg, the larger tiger subspecies are comparable in size to the biggest extinct felids.
