  FEUP

  History
This Faculty dates back to 1762, when the Nautical School was created.
In 1911, it was founded as an Affiliated School to the Faculty of Sciences. In 1915, it became a Technical Faculty and, in 1926, it gained the   status of Faculty of Engineering.
Nowadays, it is one of the largest Faculties of the UP, with about 5,150 students and more than 400 lecturers, of which about two thirds hold a   doctoral degree.

  Courses
Undergraduate teaching is of particular importance to FEUP, which awards eight Graduate Degrees, but functions primarily as a research   centre. It has a special concern with Postgraduate Degrees, and has promoted the creation of specialisation courses and a deepening of the   knowledge the students acquired during their undergraduate studies.
Presently, FEUP awards 21 Master's Degrees and Doctoral Degrees in eight scientific areas.
The courses provide students with a gateway to professional and technical careers amongst a wide range of jobs in industry and services,   local and public authorities, education, research, manufacturing, construction, etc.

  Organisation
The Faculty has a lawful department structure since 1990: Civil Engineering, Mine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial   Management, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.
The Departments have their own administrative organs and are divided into sections when their dimension and the plurality of the scientific   fields included require it.

  Research
Besides teaching, the Faculty develops research activities and renders services through research centres and interface institutes. These   organisations haveas their main goal the utilisation of the scientific, technical, human and material resources of the FEUP in the development   of fundamental or applied research. These centres also give an important assistance to the accomplishment of Master's and Doctoral thesis.

  Services
The Faculty of Engineering has several services, namely a modern Library with 500 seats, a Computer Centre which provides network   connections and manages more than 20 informatics rooms, an Auditorium with 500 seats and with all the audiovisual equipment, a   Multimedia Centre for digital copy, digitalization and multimedia edition, a canteen and three bars and several areas for work and leisure.   The Faculty also provides a Student Support Office, External Relations and Continuous Training services.
