The HERITAGE cycle of Seminars and Workshops, co-organized by the IC Instituto da Construção FEUP and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, will have Vila de Monforte (in Alto Alentejo) as an anchoring point and study for this academic year. support from the Municipality of Monforte.
In this village of Monforte, a cycle of Online Seminars will be developed with world experts whose knowledge will be shared in the form of modules of thematic seminars leading to the workshop to be held at the end of June 2022, during a week in the village with teachers and tutors with a strong practical component. It is intended to provide students [mainly, but not exclusively, from the 2nd cycle (4 and 5 years) of Architecture and Civil Engineering courses] the opportunity to develop, as part of multidisciplinary teams, specific proposals for heritage rehabilitation in the urban context of the center history, buildings and urban space.
The workshop will aim to provide participants with the opportunity to put into practice research methodologies and heritage intervention, in a real context, with the support of teachers and tutors, also contributing to the requalification of the village and the enhancement of the region.
The second Seminar of a total of 4 will take place Online on December 13th between 11:50am and 2:30pm. All Seminars will be free, but prior registration is essential, the Workshop will be mostly sponsored, with a fee for each selected student after analysis of their CV and Portfolio.

Invited Speakers
PhD in Eco Construction and Rehabilitation (2020) from the University of Minho with the thesis “Modelling the life cycle performance of Portuguese vernacular buildings: assessment and contribution for sustainable construction” (awarded ex aequo in 1st edition of the Prémios Arquitetura Sustentabilidade e Inovação – thesis category (2021). MSc (2012) in Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation by University of Minho with the thesis “The contribution of Portuguese vernacular architecture to the sustainability of constructions” (in Portuguese). Graduated in architecture from the University of Évora where he gained practice in research with the development of the dissertation “Passive Cooling in Évora’s traditional architecture”. Between 2007 and 2012 he worked in the architecture office “Armadilha Solar – arquitectura, energia e ecologia”, where he collaborated in the design of sustainable construction projects. He is currently a research fellow at the University of Minho, where is developing research on sustainability principles of vernacular architecture and exploring new ways of integrating those principles into modern sustainable buildings. He has authored and co-authored more than thirty publications on the above-mentioned topics. He is a member of the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE) and a member of the direction board of the Associação Centro da Terra.
Esmeralda Paupério, engenheira Civil integrou desde 2000 o Núcleo de Reabilitação do Instituto da Construção da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto trabalhando na área da inspeção, diagnóstico e definição de intervenções de âmbito estrutural em particular na área do património cultural imóvel. Possui o Mestrado em engenharia civil e uma Pós Graduação em pintura mural. Tem trabalhado na área de gestão de riscos do património cultural móvel e imóvel, tendo sido convidada pela UNESCO para dar formação nesta área na Albânia, Líbano e em associação com a Escola do Património Africano nos PALOP. É docente convidada do Curso Estudos Avançados em Reabilitação do Património Edificado da FEUP. É membro do Conselho de Administração do ICOMOS Portugal e membro convidada do Grémio do Património (GECoRPA). Integrou a missão conjunta do ICOMOS/ICORP, ICCROM e Smithsonian Institute a Catmandu após o sismo de 2015. É autora de inúmeras publicações e revisora das versões portuguesas das publicações do ICCROM “Endangered Heritage Emergency Evacuation of Heritage Collections” e do “First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis” Handbook &Tool Kit.
Francisco Fonseca (b.1978) started as an apprentice to the Dutch builder and artist Carl Giskes, in 2004.
In 2009 Fonseca started the building workshop Skrei in the fields of arts, architecture and experimental construction, whose work was showcased at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon Museum of Architecture Art and Technology, Chiado Museum, Royal Academy of Arts (London), Swiss Architecture Museum (Basel), Matadero (Madrid), and University of Columbia (New York).
In 2020 Fonseca joined the fashion developer Matilde Cabral adding her experience on cultivated materials, natural fibers and textiles, to his experimental work on building materiality, under a new workshop called Pedrêz.
Pedrêz is author of unique built experiments raging from earth building to organic and composite solutions such as multi-layered adobe-hemp blocks, charcoal adobe-hemp blocks, and even prefab adobe-hemp masonries.
Francisco Fonseca é arquitecto pela Universidade de Tecnologia de Delft (Holanda) onde desde cedo estudou e trabalhou na construção em terra (2004-2008).
Em 2009 iniciou no Porto a oficina Skrei que durante dez anos se dedicou às áreas da arte, arquitetura e construção experimental. A Skrei teve o seu trabalho exposto na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Museu de Arquitetura Arte e Tecnologia de Lisboa (MAAT), Museu do Chiado, Academia Real das Artes (Londres), Museu Suíço de Arquitectura (Basileia), Matadero (Madrid), Universidade Collumbia (Nova Iorque).
Em 2020 Francisco Fonseca juntou-se à designer de moda Matilde Cabral, trazendo o conhecimento das fibras e dos têxteis para a investigação sobre materialidade e infraestruturação de edifícios, formando a oficina Pedrêz.
A Pedrêz conta já com construções únicas nas tecnologias de terra compactada, blocos de adobe-cânhamo multicamada, adobe-cânhamo de carvão, e betão com fibras de cânhamo.
Seif El Rashidi is an architectural historian whose work focuses on the preservation of urban, architectural and craft heritage. He is currently the director of The Barakat Trust, a UK charity that supports the preservation of heritage related to the Islamic world. He was formerly the project manager for Layers of London, a map-based website that enables public contributions to the diverse history of London; the Magna Carta Programme Manager for Salisbury Cathedral; the Coordinator of Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site; a preservation planner for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s Historic Cities Programme in Cairo, and a team member at Ahmad Hamid Architects.
He has extensive experience assessing historic urban environments, especially in the Middle East, and in developing urban conservation plans that see local communities and their urban environments as inseparable.
