Sustainability

“The future depends on what you do today.” Mahatma Gandhi

The term “sustainable” comes from the Latin sustare (sustain; defend; favor, support; conserve, care). We understand sustainability as the ability to meet our needs in the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainability is a holistic approach that considers the environmental, social and economic dimensions, recognizing that they must all be considered together for lasting prosperity.
In 2015, the Commissioner for Sustainability (CS) took office with the mission of contributing to a better society, incorporating the principles of sustainable development in FEUP’s decision-making processes, reflecting on its nuclear operations and activities (education, research & development and interaction with society).
Since then, there are countless and varied initiatives to promote sustainability, in which several initiatives are carried out to make the campus more sustainable.
Also in terms of patronage and social responsibility, FEUP has stood out. In order to bring the scientific and business communities together, companies have the possibility to promote research, through donations or contributions, becoming scientific patrons and obtaining tax benefits as a result of this investment in the knowledge society.

The integration of social concerns in the daily lives of companies currently assumes an increasingly important role in organizations, which seek to contribute to a more just society. FEUP also has this concern, which companies can join through the FEUP Social project.

FEUP Social Project

This project, the result of a partnership between GASPorto and FEUP, targets students with economic needs, including those from the PALOP and Timor, and with the objective of facilitating the insertion of these young people, helping them to overcome difficulties that often lead to school failure and dropping out of the course. Companies can collaborate with FEUP in this area, granting summer internships to these students, in exchange for a scholarship that covers the value of the tuition fee for their studies. Internships can cover the most varied tasks, not having to be limited to the Engineering area.
