Back to Top University of Paderborn - Heinz Nixdorf Institut (HNI), Germany

The HNI is an interdisciplinary research centre for the computer science and technology within the Universität-Gesamthochschule of Paderborn. The constitutional meeting of the founding members of the board of trustees took place in October 23rd 1987. Today about 100 researchers (computer scientist and engineers) are working at the HNI. The working group "information systems, especially CIM" with 15 researchers has it's main subjection in the field of models and algorithms for distributed production planning and control systems as well as workflow management and telework.

INESC- Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores is a private, non-profit, public utility RTD institute. The largest one comprising 650 people whose activities can be grouped in four areas :

  • Information Systems,
  • Electronics,
  • Telecommunications and
  • Manufacturing Systems.

The INESC groups Telecommunications and Manufacturing Systems are involved in the COBIP project.

INESC, as project co-ordinator, will be responsible for managing the project, making sure that the project goals are successfully achieved. INESC will further contribute to the project objectives by providing know how on the Multimedia and Communications as well as on enterprise modelling and integration (to be used both at work-package 3 and 4).

INTERFACE is a management consulting company, implementing created consulting concepts also. The practise is focused on trading and distribution channels (for consumer and technical goods), from manufacturing through retail sale, including all logistical and planning functions. INTERFACE offers professional services in consulting and system development in manufacturing, logistics and supply management, information technology, marketing, sales- and distribution-Systems, retail.

INTERFACE, founded in 1993, is based in Nuremberg and Munich and is part of a group of companies. INTERFACE has been involved in projects of textile, automotive, retail and print industry. The solutions, realised in these projects, covering the whole distribution network and production planning systems are today basis of INTERFACE products. INTERFACE’s participation in such projects has resulted in an extensive company know-how in the areas of article identification, of logistics and workflow management and of marketing, sales and distribution. This provided the opportunity to enhance the company’s technological capabilities and to facilitate the adaptation of state-of-the-art software engineering methods.

STOILAS Media & Design, created in 1989 by its current general manager Efthimios Stoilas, is an advertising agency, which creates marketing- and advertising concepts for Greek companies focussing European markets. Extensive marketing and advertising concepts were worked out for the customers. At present this work includes the following activities:

  • Market surveys
  • Product analysis
  • Draft advertising concepts
  • Graphical layout, poster advertising, Internet advertising, Internet presentations and CD-ROM presentations
  • Testing and feedback of the advertising activities

STOILAS Media & Design is involved in advertising projects of Greek companies, which wants to enter the European market. Therefore it is important to offer its services all-over Europe, although the agency is small. STOILAS has expanded in the last years in Greece and to Germany. Its business strategy is to act in very small units at the location near the customer and to integrate philosophy and feeling of each country to a sensual conception. These are reasons for the success of STOILAS.

TECNOTRON, Sistemas de Automação, S.A. was founded in 1991 to address the needs of industrial companies regarding IT systems, in the shop floor management and control areas. TECNOTRON is a privately owned company with a share capital of 75 000 000 PTE, having COMPTRIS, SULPEDIP and CEDINTEC as its main shareholders. Through these shareholders, TECNOTRON relies on strong connections with the COMPTA group (a private group of twenty companies selling IT products and services) and INETI (the main national institute for industrial technologies).

TECNOTRON's sales turnover has increased strongly from its first year to an estimated amount of 2.2. million ECU in 1995. The company employs around 30 people, including 22 in technical functions. From these, twenty are engineers or other diplomed with multi-disciplinary skills (electronics, production, mechanics, computer science, management).

TECNOTRON defines itself as a systems integrator, with three main product lines: 1) Manufacturing management systems; 2) Industrial logistic systems; 3) Supervisory control and data acquisition systems. These core products are augmented by most services associated with turnkey implementations, including initial diagnosis, problem solving, specialized consultancy, process redesign and management of change. For these activities, TECNOTRON relies on its multi-disciplinary staff, subcontracted consultants, R&D centers and on the University.

The Volkswagen Group is the largest selling car producer in Europe and number five in the world. The Volkswagen Group contains the brands Volkswagen Cars, Volkswagen light trucks, Audi, Skoda and SEAT. Besides the traditional sites in Germany in Europe there are factories in Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Czekia, Slovakia, and Poland.

The Wolfsburg plant, which is participating in this project, is the largest car plant within the Volkswagen Group. The Wolfsburg plant is called the "leading plant" for the golf and polo class world wide. The daily production is 3.000 cars plus a range of components like dashboards, bumpers, gear shafts, wheels. Current models, produced in Wolfsburg are Golf, Golf Variant, Vento, Polo and SEAT Arosa.

One of the Volkswagen car plants in Wolfsburg is involved in the COBIP project.
