Foreign stereographers / publishers - Hawley C. White

Hawley C. White came from the optics area, where he initiated operations in 1870 [Rubinstein 2003], and started publishing stereoviews in 1899 [Darrah 1997, p. 51]. The factory erected in 1907 was highly automated and apparently one of the finest production facilities of its time, enabling a production of 15,000 views per day. Darrah also mentions that the company's chief photographer had visited all the continents, which undoubtedly helped them to be able to offer 22 boxed sets by 1904, a number which grew to reach about 40 in later years. The numbering on some of their images suggests that one of these sets might be Portugal. The company ceased operations circa 1915 and the negatives were sold to the Keystone View Company (White negatives in Keystone views are identified by the "W" prefix).

Two types of card mounts are known, as follows:

Black curved card mount with round-corner images. Printed vertically on the left: "H. C. WHITE CO., CHICAGO, NEW YORK, LONDON. Gen'l Office and Works, North Bennington, Vt., U.S.A." Printed vertically on the right: "The "PERFEC" STEREOGRAPH. (Trade Mark.) - EDITION de LUXE. Patented April 14, 1903." Image reference number, caption and copyright information ("Copyright 1907 by J. J. Killelea & Co.") are printed horizontally on the lower right. This type of card mount normally repeats the image number and caption (in English, French, Spanish, German, Swedish and Russian) on the back, although on some of the cards the backside is blank.

Grey curved card mount with round-corner images. Printed vertically on the left: "H. C. WHITE CO., CHICAGO, NEW YORK, LONDON. Gen'l Office and Works, North Bennington, Vt., U.S.A." Printed vertically on the right: "The "PERFEC" STEREOGRAPH. (Trade Mark.) - Patented April 14, 1903. Other Patents Pending." Image reference number, caption and copyright information ("Copyright 1907 by J. J. Killelea & Co.") are printed horizontally on the lower right (backside blank).
