Eternity Puzzle: A polygonal jigsaw puzzle with an ingenious set of pieces, developed by Christopher Monckton. There are 209 pieces to be fitted into an outline. A prize of £1,000,000 was offered for its first solution. I bought the puzzle just a few days after being launched and almost solved it in about 1 month. Unfortunately it's been solved first by Alex Selby and Oliver Riordan (Their Solution). Independently, it was also solved by Guenter Stertenbrink (His Solution). The puzzle possible combinations is a number so huge as (6*2*1000)^209 = 3.5*10^852. So you may use all the computers around earth to find the solution in the next billions of years and still don't find it (by using brute force search)!

Some Simple Puzzles

Find the Cross: Find a bigger cross exactly with shape A in the big picture B!

A     B

Strange Triangle: Where went the two missing squares after rearranging the triangle pieces?

Lateral Thinking Puzzles

Lateral thinking puzzles are often strange situations which require an explanation. They are solved through a dialogue between the quizmaster who sets the puzzle and the solver or solvers who try to figure out the answer. The puzzles as stated generally do not contain sufficient information for the solver to uncover the solution. So a key part of the process is the asking of questions. The questions can receive one of only three possible answers - yes, no or irrelevant.

When one line of enquiry reaches an end then another approach is needed, often from a completely new direction. This is where the lateral thinking comes in. Some people find it frustrating that for any puzzle it is possible to construct various answers which fit the initial statement of the puzzle. However, for a good lateral thinking puzzle, the proper answer will be the best in the sense of the most apt and satisfying. When you hear the right answer to a good puzzle of this type you should want to kick yourself for not working it out!

This kind of puzzle teaches you to check your assumptions about any situation. You need to be open-minded, flexible and creative in your questioning and able to put lots of different clues and pieces of information together. Once you reach a viable solution you keep going in order to refine it or replace it with a better solution. This is lateral thinking!

Example of a Lateral Thinking Puzzle: (The Man in the Bar)

A man walks into a bar and asks the barman for a glass of water. The barman pulls out a gun and points it at the man. The man says 'Thank you' and walks out. What is the explanation?

(This puzzle has claims to be the best of the genre. It is simple in its statement, absolutely baffling and yet with a completely satisfying solution. Most people struggle very hard to solve this one yet they like the answer when they hear it or have the satisfaction of figuring it out. Solution )

Wally Tests

Wally Test: Assess your skill at a Wally Test from Paul Sloane's Great Lateral Thinking Puzzles. Get pencil and paper and write down the answers to following questions. You have two minutes:

  1. If a ton of coal costs $30 and a ton of coke costs $25, what will a ton of firewood come to?
  2. Removing an appendix is called an appendectomy, removing tonsils is called a tonsillectomy. What is it called when they remove a growth from your head?
  3. Why are U.S. soldiers forbidden to carry rifles any longer?
  4. What three things that you can eat can never have for breakfast?
  5. If a farmer raises wheat in dry weather, what does he raise in wet weather?
  6. What would you call a person who did not have all his fingers on one hand?
  7. Which is greater: six dozen dozen or half a dozen dozen?
  8. What is the best way to get down from a camel?
  9. How could a man be severely injured being hit by some tomatoes?
  10. Why do Chinese men eat more rice than Japanese men?

Check Out the Answers

Common Sense Test

bulletQ1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?
bulletQ2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?
bulletQ3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend, except one. Which animal does not attend?
bulletQ4. There is a river you must cross, but it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it?

Answers:

bulletR1. Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe and close the door. (This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.)
bulletR2. Wrong Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant and close the refrigerator. Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. (This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions)
bulletR3. The elephant, since it is still in the refrigerator. (This tests your memory.)
bulletR4. Correct Answer: You swim across. All of the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting! (This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.)

Final Note: According to Andersen Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all of the questions wrong. But many pre-schoolers got several correct answers. Andersen Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four year old.

Porto City - World Heritage

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, magnificently situated on the mouth of the River Douro, the 'granite city' is best known for its beautiful bridges, successful soccer club (FC Porto - European champion in 1987 and 2004) and its world wide famous Port wine, which is tasted by wine lovers all over the world.

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1996, the old town in Porto (Ribeira riverside district) is a warren of narrow, twisting streets and shadowy arches. The ongoing restoration of this lively quarter is attracting a growing number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Crossing the spectacular two-tiered D. Luís I bridge brings you to Gaia, where visitors can visit the world famous wine cellars, such as Sandeman, Taylor's, Grahams and Cockburns. The highlight of the tour is the mandatory wine tasting session at the end.

The fishing towns of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira to the north of Porto have some of the best fish and seafood restaurants in Portugal. Travelling south and within easy reach of the city, visitors may go to Espinho for a relaxed beach side resort setting with hotels and a casino.

Robots and Competitions

I have several projects dealing with robotics and competitions like: FC Portugal: RoboCup Simulation League Team (World Champion in 2000, European champion in 2000 and 2001, coach champion in 2002, etc.) SIGA: Soccer Intelligent Game Analysis (in real soccer), Rescue: Coordination of Heterogeneous Teams in Search and Rescue Scenarios (this year we will participate  in RoboCup - Osaka, Japan and in the German Open), Portus: A Common Framework for Cooperative Robotics and its associated 5DPO Team: RoboCup teams for small-size and middle-size leagues (European champion in 2001), LEMAS: RoboCup team for the Sony-legged league using learning and its associated FC Portus team (5th in RoboCup in 2003).

I also participate (myself or supporting student teams) in several international competitions like RoboCup (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005), EuroRoboCup, German Open, etc., and in several national competitions like the Portuguese Robotics Open (Festival Nacional de Robótica) in autonomous driving and several types of robotic soccer, Micro-Mouse and Ciber-Mouse (1999-2005) and Robotic Fire-Fighting (Robot Bombeiro).

I have also organized or participated in the organization of several robotic competitions and other robotic events like the Portuguese Robotics Open 2004 and its Scientific Meeting, or the RoboCup Tutorial – The RoboCup International Initiative: AI Meets Robotics to Create RoboSoccer Teams, (EPIA 2001).

In our lab we have real and virtual robots of several types, including Sony AIBOs ERS-7 and ERS210A, small-size and middle-size robots. If you are interested in Participating in our RoboCup Teams (FC Portugal, 5dpo, FC Portus) or Build a Robot to participate in any of these competitions? Please contact me?
