Afternoon sightseeing tour followed by dinner at Taylors Portwine Cellars

The coaches will depart from Hotel Solverde in the afternoon (exact time will be given at a later date).

The first stop of the sightseeing tour of Porto will be at “Serra do Pilar”, a viewpoint located on the south side of the river Douro. From this place we will have a magnificent view over the river and Porto on the other side of Douro.

After enjoying the views we will board the coaches that will take us to the pier where the traditional Rabelo boats are waiting for us to embark for a river cruise under the bridges of river Douro. These traditional Rabelo boats were formerly used to ship the portwine casks from the vineyards up the river to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia where the wine is stored. Refreshments will be available onboard during the boat trip.

At the end of the trip, the Rabelo boats will come alongside at the Porto side of the river and we will continue by foot for a short walk to the coaches that will take us for a visit to the Serralves park and art museum. The Serralves Foundation was created in 1989 and two years later, award-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira was commissioned to design the new museum that was opened in 1996. The Serralves Museum is one of the foremost contemporary art museums in Portugal, uniquely situated in the grounds of the Serralves Estate, which also comprises a Park and a Villa.

Following the visit to the Serralves we will pass by the center of Porto in order to reach the Taylors Portwine Cellars for a guided tour of the wine cellars and dinner. Taylor’s is considered the archetypal Port wine house and its wines as the quintessential Ports. Established more than three centuries ago, in 1692, Taylor’s is one of the oldest of the founding Port houses. It is dedicated entirely to the production of Port wine and in particular to its finest styles. Dinner will be served in the estate rooms next to the cellars.
Coaches will take us back to the hotels at the end of the dinner event.

An extra suggestion

Some conference participants (including all students and some late-registered delegates) will be accommodated in two hotels (Solverde Apartments and PraiaGolf Hotels) in Espinho. These hotels are not far from an Espinho cake shop called AIPAL that is famous for its “bolas de Berlim” cakes. AIPAL has the particularity to be open until 4 am.
