About

DSIE’16, the 11th edition of the Doctoral Symposium in Informatics Engineering is part of the "Methodologies for Scientific Research" course and of the workshops series, which started in 2005, held by the Doctoral Program in Informatics Engineering (ProDEI) and the Doctoral Program in Telecommunications (MAP-tele) at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. The conference will take place at FEUP on February 3, 2016.

We are delighted to invite PhD students to submit their contributions to DSIE'16 to share their insights and knowledge on their areas of expertise. DSIE aims to improve the PhD students' proficiency in scientific research, writing and presentation skills. Symposium participants will expose and discuss their research, while receiving valuable expert comments and promoting their own experience. New ideas, methods and applications leads the PhD students to a good improvement of their thesis content.

This website provides all the information about the symposium activities. We invite you to explore it and get to know about all the details of the event.

Call For Papers

Authors are invited to submit papers reporting research results, which will be evaluated in terms of: originality, technical content and accuracy, significance of the work, presentation (organization, style and clearness), and appropriateness of references to papers presented in earlier editions of the event.

Contributions should report on substantial research supported by complete results. All papers will be single-blind reviewed by the members of the scientific committee. This requires removing any information which may suggest who the authors are (in the first page, in the references etc.).

All papers must be submitted electronically in the EasyChair system.

Papers must have a length between 10 and 12 pages, complying with the official Springer LNCS template. Only PDF files will be accepted.

All received submissions will be acknowledged via an automated system. We would recommend that you respect the page limit and no more than one contribution per event. At least one author for each accepted paper must register to ensure that the paper will be included in the conference proceeding.

Additionally, reviewers recommendations must be addressed by the authors before they submit the final version.

Each paper author will have a maximum of 15 minutes to present the work during the Presentation Sessions, followed by approximately 5 minutes of discussion.

Lecture

Cyber-sovereignty: sovereignty in a world without borders

Lecture Overview

The internet is global by nature and unhindered by physical borders, network technologies challenge the existing concept of sovereignty, where each sovereign jurisdiction regulates communication that takes place in its territory. Bypassing geographical and jurisdictional restraints, the internet is a serious concern for the traditional notion of sovereignty.

In cyberspace it is technically possible to operate anonymously threatening interconnected targets around the globe, there is extensive discussion as to whether the concept of borders is relevant to the challenges of cyber security as they define the territory in which national governments can employ sovereign measures. In this talk we will cover technological aspects of cyber-sovereignty that should be considered in any nation cyber-security strategy.
