Cyber-sovereignty: sovereignty in a world without borders

Lecture Overview

The internet is global by nature and unhindered by physical borders, network technologies challenge the existing concept of sovereignty, where each sovereign jurisdiction regulates communication that takes place in its territory. Bypassing geographical and jurisdictional restraints, the internet is a serious concern for the traditional notion of sovereignty.

In cyberspace it is technically possible to operate anonymously threatening interconnected targets around the globe, there is extensive discussion as to whether the concept of borders is relevant to the challenges of cyber security as they define the territory in which national governments can employ sovereign measures. In this talk we will cover technological aspects of cyber-sovereignty that should be considered in any nation cyber-security strategy.

Speaker Biography

Luís Filipe Coelho Antunes, Associate Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP). Director of the Competence Centre for Cybersecurity and Privacy, University of Porto. Senior researcher at INESC-TEC. Member of the Scientific Council of FCUP and member of the Council for Electronic Administration at the University of Porto.

Develops research activity in the field of computer security, having several scientific publications. Successfully guided 5 PhD students and belongs to several research projects funded by FCT. Has exercised consultancy activity in the area of ​​computer security for the Ministry of Health and the Portuguese Data Protection Commission. Is accredited by the National Security Cabinet and is expert at ENISA (European Union Agency for Network and Information Security) in the area of ​​eID and eGovernment eHealth.

Luís Antunes appears regularly on TV program as information security expert. In 2013 co-founded a spin-off from the University, called HealthySystems that centers its activity in the area of information security with a strong focus on auditing, eID and anonymization techniques. Recently co-founded the University of Porto spin-off Adyta. Adyta main objective is to promote specialized security solutions tailored to the needs of sovereign bodies dealing with sensitive or classified information and large business groups. Adyta focuses its activity in the defense field and securing communications through innovative solutions and adjusted to each customer. This spin-off is the result of several years of collaboration with the Portuguese National Security Agency.

Talk Overview

Catarina and Pedro, PhD's in Computer Science, are going to present the new Deloitte approach to the Financial industry, more specifically banks and insurance. In Deloitte, these researchers are inserted in the Centre for Disruption (C4D). The C4D main challenge is to create a game shift in big data visualization, manipulation and analysis by applying the recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision and Computer Graphics. With C4D, Deloitte shows how it is possible to combine more than 100 years of experience in consulting with scientific knowledge to deliver out-of-the-box Virtual Reality and Augmented reality environments that disrupt the way we see the Financial system.

Porto

The city of Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal and one of the major urban areas in Southern Europe. Its administrative limits (an area of 41.66 km²) include a population of 237,584 (2011) inhabitants distributed within 7 civil parishes.

The urban area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.4 million (2011) in an area of 389 km², making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres.

The variety of monumental and artistic patrimony and the Port Wine cellars were some of the reasons why UNESCO classified the city as World Heritage, in 1996. Some of the city highlights include the Sé Cathedral, a neoclassical Stock Exchange, the Portuguese Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara, the Port Wine cellars, the D. Luís I Bridge, the S. Bento Station and Casa da Música.

In 2014, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency.

Porto is growing as a tourism and business destination, receiving 2,5 millions of passengers each year. It has an intense cultural and social life and the city shared the designation of European Capital of Culture in 2001.

FEUP

The University of Porto is nowadays the largest in Portugal and recognized by its prestigious teaching and research communities. DSIE’16 will be held at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), which is considered one of the top-level engineering schools in Europe. Since it’s creation in 1926, FEUP has the mission of training high qualified engineers and practice research and development of excellence.
