Systems Planning℠ consolidates its body of knowledge (γνώση) in original and carefully prepared scholarly publications, collected in a ‘store of knowledge’. Early works were published by mainstream academic publishers; with experience and appropriate technology, new works ensued as independent productions, crafted with personal care and pioneering editorial style. With the exception of ‘deluxe’ editions, publication copies may be requested.
The editorial interface of Systems Planning℠
serves the corresponding domain of expertise (e.g. system organisation, action arrangements) and
is committed to the advancement of scholarly publishing (e.g. reliability, independence, innovation).
Specifications —
Intent: Dissemination of scholarly content pro bono publico.
Content: Trustworthy publications at an advanced level (e.g. understanding, knowledge) and, in a complementary way, at a basic level (e.g. data, information).
Container: The type of publication (e.g. journal article, poster) and the corresponding medium (e.g. print, online) should suit the content, including its extent and detail.
Emission —
Freedom: Scholars reserve the right to publish anything they deem necessary for their function; this also fosters the evolution of science through the development of pondered alternatives.
Responsibility: Scholarly publishing requires of authors and publishers dedication and competence regarding content as much as procedures (e.g. content- or publication-specific).
Reception —
Educated Readership: Discerning the trustworthiness of content in any publication requires appropriate scrutiny by the readers, who must be well prepared.
Constructive Feedback: Competent and impartial reviewers help improve the quality of scholarly publications through permanently open, community-wide feedback.
Interference —
Business: Choices or pressures of the publication media should be clearly distinguished from the merit of content (e.g. topicality, sound reasoning and procedures).
Subjects: Existing journals on currently available subjects should not hinder the creation of new channels and means to share scholarly content appropriately.

IntentDirect appreciation/ assessment of publications PracticeInherent merit instead of surrogates of ‘quality’ or ‘value’ AdvancesPublishing independence — re: publishers, scholarly community, institutions ResolvesMeaningless or disorienting surrogates (e.g. impact factor, rankings)

IntentDocument editions with continuous improvement PracticeHigh-quality media with the same rights to improvement as ‘apps’ AdvancesPublication quality — re: content, format, production, distribution ResolvesAntiquated formats, publication, and maintenance (e.g. errata correction)
The independent scholarly publications of Systems Planning℠ are created and curated in the in-house editorial style™, thus resolving legacy shortcomings of mainstream scholarly publishing (e.g. hasty procedures, suppressed error correction, assessment by proxy).
For relatively large and ‘stable’ works such as books, editions are ‘quantised’ as the first publication and subsequent major revisions (e.g. changes in content, medium, or layout). Minor revisions (e.g. correction of grammatical, syntactic, or formatting errors) are marked by a ‘modified on:’ date at the Impressum, and are generally not relevant for referencing purposes.
Relatively short publications (e.g. articles, folios, pamphlets, blogs, reports, software) entail a high volume of minor revisions — whether standalone modifications or synchronisation across related documents — in order to maintain their validity. Such documents typically bear both the initial and ‘latest edition’ marks, and are referenced as necessary.
In the unique case of websites (incl. web ports), structure and content varies significantly with time — potentially much more than any other publication. Still, web entities manage to maintain their public identity as a whole, which bears both the initial and ‘latest edition’ marks, and is referenced as necessary.
For unique ‘record’ documents (e.g. photographs) or distinct editions of books (e.g. ‘2nd ed.’), the copyright year is that of the publication.
For ‘live’ or rapidly evolving publications such as websites, the copyright is indicated either as the year of the first publication, or the range of years from the first publication to the latest modification (‘last updated:’ mark on every page footer).
Indexing: Systems Planning℠ publications are indexed (a) originally at the publisher's website and (b) optionally at select services. Indexing is indirectly aided by cross-referencing, aggregation of information, and networking activities.
A·B·F·P·R·W·V·S·EReferencing: The Systems Planning℠ bibliography style is based on the Harvard style, adjusted for recent publication formats (e.g. websites, webcasts, software, blogs, e-books, online journals).
Search:
(a) Site-wide: Google engine, local scope, search box; Input: keywords; Output: HTML pages with the keywords;
(b) Page-wide: OS engine, <Cmd+F>/<Ctrl+F> operator; Input: keywords; Output: highlighted keywords on the page.
Editor-in-ChiefRelease: Since 2022, in order to
(a) avoid plagiarism and other misuses,
(b) cater to the needs of readers,
(c) facilitate feedback, and
(d) reinforce networking,
the digital publications of Systems Planning℠ (c.f. classic prints/ deluxe editions) are made available in a ‘library+’ model:
(i) personalised request,
(ii) limited checkout (‘no hoarding’ policy),
(iii) responsible feedback before next checkout,
(iv) adherence to the copyright and licensing terms.

VIDEOThe Systems Planning℠ holistic organisation platform™(2019) A. Perdicoulis2019 NOV 22 About:presenting Systems Planning℠ at a Collective Learning Meeting (CLM) of the WPI System Dynamics Club Concepts:common ground between SD/ ST and SP (e.g. system perspective, CLD/ RBP diagrams); differences (e.g. mark-up, stakeholder views, problem formality, qualitative simulation) Argument:Causal diagrams seek a causal understanding of ‘how things work’; process diagrams give a procedural perspective; plan diagrams show ‘what is to be done’ (incl. reasons and outcomes) and prepare for assessment and refinement; all diagrams relate to the formal problem with appropriate mark-up (e.g. ‘XYZ’) Example:HEI Enhancement; views: system with mark-up (RBP); one sectoral plan (DCD); integrated summary of solutions (RBP) Usage:Walk-through, SPDP℠
VIDEOStakeholder examination(2013) A. Perdicoulis2013 APR 25 About:taking interest in success Concepts:proposals (e.g. strategies, plans, policies); stakeholders; understanding; perspectives Argument:stakeholders examine proposals in various perspectives (e.g. procedural, organisational, causal) and in context (e.g. within a system) Examples:city strategy (‘a great place to live’); perspectives: organisational (Kaplan-Norton strategy map); procedural (CPD); causal (DCD) Associated artwork:marked reverse blueprint (mRBP) Usage:part of the Achieving with Systems Planning℠ mini-series of the SPDP℠
VIDEOProblem-solving attitude(2013) A. Perdicoulis2013 APR 22 About:confronting problems Concepts:problem; project; attitude; procedure; protocol; structure; set-up Argument:problem-solving starts with an attitude, before being placed in context (e.g. within a system), given a structure (e.g. ‘XYZ’), etc. Examples:protocols: science (inactive/ explanatory); automation (reactive/ prescriptive); planning (proactive/ interventional) Usage:part of the Achieving with Systems Planning℠ mini-series of the SPDP℠
VIDEOMeaningful communication(2013) A. Perdicoulis2013 APR 12 About:understanding and conveying systems Concepts:system; indicators; indices; understanding Argument:systems are to be understood, so information about them must be meaningful Examples:system description: text; indicators; indices; system (RBP); system RBP with problem mark-up (XYZ) Usage:part of the Achieving with Systems Planning℠ mini-series of the SPDP℠

Testimonial
“The book is good for practitioners wanting to develop an understanding of the interface between EIA, environmental management plans, environmental management systems and sustainability management. Researchers examining EIA follow-up or the environmental management of developments should have ready access to this book, but it also holds value for practitioners in consultancies, contractors and large developers who would like a better understanding of how to manage environmental risk during the design, consenting, construction and operation of EIA developments.”

“Spatial planning can be a very rewarding activity; it can also be a very challenging one. It involves difficult choices, critical thinking and questioning. As the author, Anastassios Perdicoulis notes, in his innovative new text, it involves questions such as: ‘Where are we? Where do we want to be? How do we get there? What options do we have? What is the best option for our case?’ The focus of this book is on the key steps involved in the planning process and on special techniques to undertake these steps. It is about managing those steps as efficiently as possible, but always considering the people with whom and for whom the planners plan.
The book makes good use of practice examples and diagrams to help planners to build their competences. While it is primarily directed at planning students and newly qualified planners, the contents will also be of interest to those with considerable experience who may wish to question or review their established methods; the book also has great international transferability. The author has an engaging style, leading the reader through areas such as team functions, how to define the planning problem, organising timings and the effective use of charts and diagrams. The book also encourages learning by doing with a series of thought provoking questions and mini-exercises. It is a very innovative contribution to the NBE series.”
“Systems Thinking and Decision Making in Urban and Environmental Planning constitutes an excellent, timely and innovative contribution to the planning literature that goes well beyond the classical systems theory. Anastassios Perdicoulis’ book is enjoyable to read, the technical language, blended with numerous examples and case studies, is well adapted to readers with different backgrounds and experiences, from planning students to professional urban and environmental planners, and the main message is clearly presented. The current non-explicit style of planning practice brings about a number of important weaknesses to the whole planning process. Against this background, the author rightly argues that appropriate actions, the rationale behind these actions and the on the ground outcomes have to be disclosed, clearly explained and verified to enable more effective communication and participation of the different stakeholders in decision making.”
“Perdicoulis’ book will serve well as an introductory text in fields of engineering, management and operations research, although not written as a textbook.”
