Work plan

Study of the previously developed BFSK modem. This preliminary step consists of a comprehensive study of the system’s functional (Matlab) and digital (Verilog) models, followed by an analysis of the identified issues and the features yet to be implemented regarding symbol synchronization and equalization. To that end, simulations with real acoustic signals acquired during field tests will be performed.

Consideration and implementation of strategies for synchronization and equalization. This task consists of an enhancement of BFSK modem’s synchronization and equalization processes. Initially, this will be done through a development of its functional models followed by a Matlab/Simulink validation thereof. Afterwards, the corresponding digital modules will be developed in Verilog. Once again, real acoustic signals will be acquired from a controlled environment and also from field tests in order to assure an appropriate validation.

Integration of the complete BFSK modem. At this stage, the transmitter and the receiver will be coupled and the performance of the entire system will be evaluated in field tests. In order to maximize the efficiency of the tests as well as the information these provide on the system’s performance, a dedicated infrastructure will be built.

Study, development and implementation of mechanisms for performance enhancement. Once the fundamental BFSK structure is fully operational, some of the possible mechanisms mentioned above will be selected according to their expected impact on the performance and complexity of the implemented system. Subsequently, the selected ones will be developed and implemented following the procedure described in the previous tasks.

Dissertation writting. This will be done throught the entire time span of the project.
