Title:Software Publishing Association
Length:6:51

Case Summary:

The Software Publisher's Association (now part of the Software and Information Industry Association) presents a dramatization of a corporate meeting in which workers learn that they have very little understanding of the laws regarding software piracy. Most of the employees have unknowingly violated copyrights and license agreements. Through the guidance of their boss and the company's legal counsel, the employees learn the letter of the law and the potential consequences of using pirated software. A comparison to having their own hard work stolen is particularly effective in reaching those who previously dismissed piracy as something that everyone does or not that damaging because someone paid for the product somewhere along the line.

Case Study Questions:

  1. Compare and contrast the attitudes of the employees toward software piracy in this case with the attitudes of the boss and the legal counsel.

  2. Demonstrate your understanding of software piracy law based on what you learned in this video. When is it legal to copy a program? When is it illegal?

  3. What misconceptions did you have about software piracy that were corrected by viewing this video?

  4. Summarize the potential consequences of committing software piracy.
